Aberlour a'bunadh #32 - sulfur?

I finally bought a bottle of a'bunadh, after having it in the bar so many times, and I'm really disappointed. All I can smell while drinking it is burnt matches. I have a bottle from batch #32.

Has anyone else had this problem, or am I imagining it? Or is this batch significantly different than others?

The one thing I can tell you is that there is variety in the batches and that this is intentional (see Live Tasting thread). I haven't had a batch that was burnt matches but have had several that tasted of sulfphates, several that were winey, others that had rich caramel and orange flavor, and some that had some rubberiness.

I bought a bottle of #32 a few days ago to replace the #27. I have had it twice now and have not noted any sulfur. It is not as profound as some other abunadhs I have had but to me it is very similiar to #27. A bit one dimensional and a very heavy sherry influence.

Out of the half dozen a'Bunadh i've tried this was the worst. Definitely a misfire, a big mistake. I am sensitive to sulphur, but didn't find this as bad as spent matches/fireworks etc., just a low dose broad spectrum of sulphur influence. But i do have a sample somewhere...

Ah yes the memories, i got a bottle just before last xmas, i took a sample and forced it on the uninterested inebriated i know. Nosing it now i get the sharp cordite first, with burnt smokey rubber in support. Everything that should be good about this whisky is stifled. I have in my notes that water makes it drinkable, now i'm not sure about that but there is some improvement.

Thanks for the input, everyone! Maybe it's not as bad as I described it, but I guess I'm also not the only one disappointed by it.

Mmmm, sounds tasty, I rather like a the sulfur match effect at times. but we're still at Batch #30

Now that it's been a month since I opened it, the sulfur seems to have mellowed a little. It's more drinkable now, but I'm still not getting the complex flavors I got from an earlier batch at the bar.

I won't be buying a'bunadh again, unfortunately.

I wouldn't judge the a'bunadh too harshly based on one batch. Check in for notes on other batches and look for notes you like. Then if you find that particular batch you should get it.

I've seen a lot of negative comments about batch 32 but I think it's fantastic. If this is getting poor reviews I can't wait to taste other batches. It only gets better from here I guess. I'm writing this as I'm enjoying a dram of batch 32.

Batch #32 is the first a'bunadh I ahve tried. No sulpher for me, mostly just some very strong sherry notes and a really chewey mouth feel. I loved it and can;t wait to get stuck in to more of them.

I've not seen one yet but have heard they changed the packaging. is this verified?

The packaging has changed slightly... New label design. And the older box has been replaced by a tube cannister.

Yes Musky. Tube for the box. The label is also different. However, the bottle is still squat.

I had a glass of this a few days ago and thought it was pretty good. It'd been awhile since I'd had an a'bunadh (batch 23, if memory serves.)
