Old Grandad 114 proof

Tried a new bourbon last night that is not in JM's book. Here are my tasting notes, with JM style scores:

Nose: Sharp rye, oak and spice - 21

Taste: Massive rye and spice, balanced by honey and maple syrup. Berry fruit. - 24

Finish: Hot long and peppery / dry / oak. - 24.

Balance: Simple delicious powerful whisky: 22. Tastes better than it smells.

Total: 91.

It really is a great whisky that grows on you.

It is very popular with the posters at http://www.straightbourbon.com - some of them rate it above the likes of GTS and the rest.

BTW you should check out those pages (if you haven't already). There are a lot of real fans of American whisky there.

Strong and smooth. I'd never even heard of it until they recommeded it to me.

The 114 is the only one that is above average in the range. The standard is below Jim Beam White IMO. Austere and out of sync...

I seem to enjoy bourbon the best when it has reached 6 years. Old Taylor is a wonderful example. It's a fantastic whiskey for it's price (€15 in Europe).

I just had some old Taylor 6 year, wasn't bad, kinda reminded me of Beam white label.

The Old Grandad 114 was recently on sale from the Ontario Liquer Control Board. I was tempted to buy, but my concern is that it seems that its fans are people who drink cask strength wiskey without watering it down. For $30 cdn it does seem like a good deal though.

Jeeeze: I woulda thunk I was mugged. Yikes!! :shock:

Clearly it's worth it for you. Come to think of it, drinking it at that abv might mimic that feeling as well (for someone who isn't used to it).
