Macallan 12 in a tin can

I just bought a Macallan 12 that comes in a tin can instead of the normal cardboard box. The design of the can is similar to the actual -well until this year- box design. Both the bottle and the can look old. Any idea when this malt was bottled?

Hi Andko,

A Macallan from a long past time. They had a occasion that they choose a tin can for the package, the only thing is which occasion? I can't remember. I can find out for you if you're interested. I got one my self at home and it's a nice looking tin tube.

It would be great if you could get further details about when these bottles were released? Is your can squarish as well?

Hi Andko,

I did asked around a little bit.

The only Macallan tinned can I know of was especially made for the French market, from what I know it happend somewhere in the late 90's.

There might be some consideration at The Macallan to do something like that again, but that's still under discussion.

Probably by cross border trade they came in to Spain....

i was in paris back in april, you can still buy it in a tin can, all over france, at least at the nicolas stores everywhere i went (yeah, i was lookin!)

Basically the 12yr macallan is strictly for foreign markets, I think it was originally for sale in Italy, or was that an 8yr old macallan ?
It sounds like a nice nice packaging though.

the 8Y was for Italy only yes.
i believe the 12 was for entire europe, while the US has the 10.

Are you sure the 8yo was for Italy? Or do you mean the present 7yo?
I have the 8yo and am still looking for another bottle.
Mailed Macallan, but never got an answer.
My 8yo bottle does NOT have this Italian tax seal, I have no idea where it came from.

12 year old is the youngest Macallan we get here in Australia, although it has always come in a cardboard box or a cylindrical tube.

Having said that, I was just given an (empty) square tin of the 12yo - exactly what you've described above - for Christmas. It came from an Ebay seller in Tasmania, so they've obviously been around the globe a bit.

to clarify, the 8 yo with a plastic cap (and some rare with a metal cap) were distilled in the 70s and bottled in the early 80s exclusively for Italy. (By the way they are THE BEST Macallan ever made for general consumption PERIOD! Simply fantastic! I have now almost 30 bottles of them and I buy all I can find because they are unbeatable and to think I would have to drink the 7 yo that is in Italy now I rather drink soap water, so I stock up for my old age on 8yos). You can also find the 7yo in a tin can like the 12yo here in Italy although they are all bought up I was lucky to find a case of them in a shop near here.
