Hi CJ,
I found some notes by Walter Schobert for you. The bottling date is not given in this book, the picture is the same as in MJ's book. It is in German though:
Ohne Wasser:
Aroma: Spur Süße, auch säuerlich nach Hefe, Schwarzbrotrinde
Geschmack: angebremst: Pfeffer, leichte Süße, eher Gewürze als Blumen, auch am Gaumen leicht brotig
Nachklang: relativ schnell verabschiedet
Mit Wasser:
Aroma: gewinnt entschieden, verliert Säuerlichkeit, harmonischer
Geschmack: erheblich schwächer, nur noch indifferente Süße
Nachklang: gibt es einen?
Bemerkungen: Das alte Dilemma: Trinken ohne, Riechen mit Wasser.
So, as a dutchie I'll try to translate that in English:
Without water:
aroma: hints of sweetness, also sour, like yeast or the crust of german black (rem: dark, is actually brownish) bread
taste: pepper, slighly sweet, more spicy than flowery, slightly breadlike
Finish: relatively 'fast gone' (so call it short)
With water:
aroma: better/improves, loses sourness, more harmonic
taste: much weaker, only indifferent sweetness
Finish: is there any?
Remarks: the old dilemma: drink without, nose with water.
I hope I did the translating right! Any native German speakers, please correct the above?
