I've seen the simple headline "Pernod Ricard is looking to acquire Allied Domecq" but has anyone heard of details?

Found a little more, "Following Allied Domecq plc press announcement today, Pernod Ricard confirms that it is considering an offer for Allied Domecq plc, and is working closely with Fortune Brands Inc. Discussions with Allied Domecq plc are at an early stage and there can be no certainty that an offer for Allied Domecq plc will ultimately be forthcoming. A further announcement will be made in due course."

And the aforementioned release from AD: "The Board of Allied Domecq PLC (the "Board") notes the recent press speculation regarding a potential offer for Allied Domecq PLC involving Pernod Ricard and Fortune Brands. The Board confirms that it is in discussions with Pernod Ricard, which is working with Fortune Brands, regarding a potential offer for Allied Domecq PLC by Pernod Ricard. These discussions are at an early stage and there can be no certainty that an offer will ultimately be forthcoming. A further announcement will be made in due course."

This potential acquisition would leapfrog PR from second place to...uh...second place among big owners. Diageo own 27 distilleries, PR 11, and Allied 10.

Pernod has made a bid for Allied. I hope Scapa survives the acquisition. I hear Laphroaig is going to Fortune Brands, along with Maker's Mark and Canadian Club. Haven't heard about Scapa or Glendronach yet...

Deal still might fall through (regulations?) though Allied's board has approved the purchase. Or another investor might make a higher bid.

According to BBC World News they'll become the biggest in terms of cases produced.

Diageo = 91 million cases
Pernod Ricard = 48 million
Allied Domecq = 47 million
