Related whiskies : Scapa 12 Years Old

My local packy has several bottles of Scapa 12--the discontinued bottling, no? Any thoughts on whether I should grab one? The new 14 has garnered some good comment, but my recollection of the 12 is that it was nothing special.

Grab all you can as long as the price is reasonable.

MrTattieHeid, I have one unopened bottle of the Scapa 12 and the 14. Here's my notes on the 12, if you're interested:

Tasting notes:
Color: Gold
Nose: Clean, soft floral, spirity, perfume, raw grain, bubble gum?
Palate: Sweet, malt, beer-like, hay, bitter middle, refreshing
Body: Oily, smooth
Finish Clean, quick, warm
Quote: A gentle breeze of a malt, malt being the recurring theme here and not much else. I can’t help but like it, but it’s a little too Lowland-like for my taste. Maybe the low ABV hurts it (almost Blend territory), I’m sure I’ll find a time when it just suits the mood I’m in. The bubble gum in the nose developed towards the end of the bottle.

I'm curious to compare the 14, but it will be awhile before it gets cracked open, since it's not one I "need to know" just yet.

I remember the bubblegum, now that you mention it--put me off a bit. Well, I'll probably grab a bottle if it's convenient, just for curiosity's sake, but won't cry if I miss it.

Notes on the 14, and comparisons of the two, are welcome.

jimi your notes on palate state straw and bitter middle.

If i remember my notes correctly, i tasted dried grasses and lemon!

Scapa 12 is worth every penny. It's a great choice for sunday afternoon.

The 12 yr old as already said isn't as good as the latest 14yr old in fact they are very diffrent. I have a 12 yr old and I would say it is worth having ...just don't expect them to be similar.

I was a big fan of the old 12yo. I loved its sweetness, and the way this interplayed with the chalky grassiness. More to the point, the malt shone through and gave some great cereal chewiness.

I think the problem for Scapa was that people kept expecting it to be like Highland Park. However, once you divorce its close proximity to HP and judge the malt on its own merits, I find it a very fine dram.

(Sadly I haven't tried the new 14yo yet, but it hasn't found its way to these shores yet.)
