Added my choice for anyone in or visiting Boston, Massachusetts. The historic Parker House Hotel also houses the finest whisky bar in the city......The Last Hurrah.

My previous job used to take me to Boston on a regular basis and once I learned of The Last Hurrah, I never stayed in another hotel.

There are some excellent specialist whisky bars in Scotland but I think to be a great bar, it has to cater for more than one group.
I considered Canny Mans in South Edinburgh but eventually plumped for the Bow Bar located in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle close to a number of other whisky attractions and a few specialist shops.

Added the whiskyclub/shop where I am in. With a range of over 100 whiskies from all possible countries open at all time I believe it is worthy.

I recommended Noonan's in Larkspur California. It has a huge selection of Scotch Irish and Bourbon. I was also going to recommend F.X. McCrory's and Jake O'Shaughnessy's in Seattle but I couldn't pick them up on internet search. Anyone lurking from Seatlle who can shed some light on the status of these two? :?:

I haven't been to F.X. McRory's for several years...but remember that it was pretty good for whiskies when I was there...

Also, I want to suggest St. Andrew's Restaurant in New York City...it's a block or two off Times Square, and has a very good list of whiskies along with authentic Scottish food...

Louisville, KY has three very fine bourbon-themed bars -- the Jockey Silks Club at the Galt House Hotel (where D Marie's is history!), Maker's Mark bar/restaurant, and BourbonsBistro.
Each also quite generously offers 2-3 nice single-malts for those who decline to 'do as the Romans do'.

Tokyo has many great whisky bars to choose from but I selected the Helmsdale and The Mash Tun. Both offer hundreds of different kinds of whiskies + other great beverages.

The Helmsdale has a great atmosphere and is a perfect place for die hard football (soccer) enthusiasts to relax and enjoy a dram or pint. Not many places where you can walk in off the street and have a dram of Macallan 1955 or a '66 Sprinbank West Highland Sherry (of course subject to availability).

Suzuki-san has set up a world class whisky bar and what a selection! That coupled with Suzuki-san's excellent service and hospitality makes The Mash Tun a super place to enjoy a dram.
Please note that this does not show even half of his selection which includes a wide range of the SMWS bottlings, Japanese malts including the new limited release Hakushu and Yamazaki bottlings, a decent bourbon selection for us bourbon enthusiasts and much more.

Oh man I really loved and miss Japan :cry:

MacLover, I couldn't agree with you more. Helmsdale is as good as it gets in Japan for whisky selection. The selection is mind-boggling and the fish&chips aren't bad either. I can't wait until my next trip back.

The Pot Still get top marks from me also Toshie, what a pub to stumble across when in Glagow, and very difficult to leave.

Also like Bow Bar and Canny Man in Edinburgh, Lochside and Port Chalotte on Islay, The Quaich Bar in Craigellachie and Drumchork Lodge in Aultbea.

If you can reach it the Drumchork lodge is excellent. Around 500 whiskies and if thats not enough Jonh and Francis are about to launch their own whisky. A distillery has been set up alongside the hotel and production should start soon. Well worth the trip!!

If in Edinburgh you should try out the Albanach, (not the same as Albanach in london), this bar is on The Royal Mile. The Albanach is a more modern bar with traditional decor. The range of whisky is not as diverse as Bow Bar as they are mostly OB`s, however some tasty rarities on offer such as Oban 32yo, Balvenie 30yo, Lagavulin 25yo and Ardbeg 77.

My choices are:

Glasgow: "The Pot Still": fantastic place, friendly, cozy with a range of whiskies that beats most of it's competitors.

Aberlour: "The Mash Tun": Not the biggest selection but this is where you meet the local whisky industry. Have a dram and talk to the distillery workers of Glenfarclas. Do not forget their food, it's fantastic. And if you don't like the Scottish Cuisine they have a great selection of beers to clean your mouth.

Stockholm, Sweden: "Akkurat": Huge selection of single malts and 600 different beers that could keep you busy for a while.

Old Glory in Washington, DC. They have a bourbon club with 80 different bourbons. Every time you try a new one they mark if off your card and when you have tried them all you get your name on a plaque on the wall.

The new episode of WhiskyCast (#27) online today has an interview with Ken Storrie, the owner of the Pot Still, which just won Whisky Magazine's Icons of Whisky Award as the best whisky bar of the year!

I have to nominate O'Loclainn's Whiskey Bar which is a beautiful traditional Irish pub located in the village of Ballyvaughan in Co. Clare. Real friendly and has a great selection of Irish Whiskey on the menu. Probably the largest selection I have seen in any Irish Pub.

Further it has hundereds of whiskey on Display including alot of scotch. An excellent collection with some rarities. Well worth a visit if only to look.

Cheers whiskychaser, I'd forgotten all about O'Loclainns. We had some great nights in there a few years ago when we stayed in Ballyvaughan. I do remember the Middelton as being rather special.

A great little pub, really friendly and now with inside toilets I believe!

Holy goodness SpiritofShetland! Yes, I recently heard about this place! It seems the collector that started this place sold it fairly recently, so the people there now are selling the stuff at the same old prices as always! Have you been then? Were the prices a thing of the past, very very moderate and cheap?? Wow, great shots, too bad Svalbard is probably further from Bergen than Scotland. Oh well, not so bad looking at it that way.

Another nice suggestion Virginia Gentelman, thanks! Nice to hear the food is good too. I start to wonder now about what these places are like, the whisky focused pubs. Again, my girlfriend is not a whisky fan, and is of course tired of just hearing the word! I'm wondering if I casually walk us in there, saying I heard the food was good, if she'll see overwhelming amounts of beautiful bottles of whisky and know what we're doing there? Or are these wonderful pubs also "non-whisky fan friendly?" Thanks, keep the good recommendations coming, I'm building a great Scotland travel log!

The prices when I was there were quite reasonable. But then again that's thanks to the fact of the whole Islandgroup being a tax-free area. It's been a few years since I was there though.

From Bergen it takes about 6-7 hours to get to Svalbard (via Oslo), while Scotland is just an hours flight away. But a visit to Svalbard is really a must, there's really no place like it in the world.

But beware, while a carton of cigarettes cost around £6 - a litre of milk will set you back £2.
