I hear that supplies are running short. Is this true?

Well, at least in spirit.

The seventeen was produced from stocks of whisky that are now gone. It will be some time before they have enough whisky to make another batch of the 17 and perhaps by that time Ardbeg will be using it for another purpose.

Who knows what will happen in another 12 years or so?

I think Lawerence posted in the wrong thread. The Balvenie PortWood, at least in the US is undergoing a cosmetic change to a wood box like the 25 yo Single Cask. Not quite as fancy or well finished as the ones used for the Vintage series from what I've heard. Of course, this will kick up the price another 20-25%. AFAIK, there is no shortage of stock.

In other words, they're repositioning it as a luxury malt (with, as you say, a rise in price). Their marketing folk must figure that such a move will not hurt sales much.

There goes the most affordable 21 yo($85US) around. I guess I'll have to stock up on the "tubed" variety before they show up here. I noticed the Glenlivet 21 yo "Archive" did the same with a rough oblong wood box, too. Not that I was going for it, neither the 12 or 18 really pushed my buttons.
