Balvenie 14 Rumwood

Postby Frodo » Sat Oct 07, 2006 8:59 pm

Any responces to the Balvenie 14 Rumwood finish? The LCBO is bringing in a limited shipment of new scotches on October 14th and this is one of them. I'm already in trouble with wanting a couple of bottles already (Arran 10, and Bowmore 16 for sure, thinking about Abelour 16), but the only 3 rum finishes I've had were great. Any thoughts?

Great whisky, I like it more than 12 yo DW or 15 yo SB.

Is the rum finish a newer thing, or has it being going on for awhile but with more publicity lately?? The OMC Ardbeg 12y rum finish I had was very nice!

Yes, the rum finish is relatively new. This is a limited edition from only 14 casks (as stated on the label). It will never be repeated (also stated on the label), but who knows ...

It is fruity and honeyed with apparent rum aroma and medium long finish.

There is also the Glenfiddich Havana Reserva or the Gran Reserva as they call it now. Don't know about availability in Canada but seeing it's banned in the US due to trade embargo's with Cuba it might not be available in Canada either.

Plenty of Cuban goods available in Canada, as any American cigar smoker will know. In any case, I understand that Glenfiddich have started using rum casks from elsewhere in the Gran Reserva to get the stuff into the USA.

We haven't seen it for a while but there may be the odd bottle lurking here or there.

The Glenfiddich 21yr Old Gran Reserva Rum Cask Finish is now being sold at Binny's in Chicago. Instead of saying from Cuban rum casks it says, "finished in casks from a famous Caribbean rum producing nation."

Cheers!

I've talked with Ian Millar of Glenfiddich about this a couple of times...they had to find casks that would match the taste of the Cuban rum casks, and finally found a source...I believe it's in the Dominican Republic. While they're bottling both versions for now, he suggested that they'll probably pick one and stick with that in the future, and it will probably be the US-legal version since that has more sales potential. If you have the chance, it might be worth sticking a couple of Cuban bottles in the back of your liquor cabinet for the future.
