Macallan 18 - 1987

Postby ScotchPalate » Wed Oct 18, 2006 5:10 pm

In the liquor stores around town, I've noticed that the Macallan 18 year all say From the Year 1987 on the box. Many people have said to me that the Macallan whiskies older than 12 year may depend on "The Vintage." Well, anybody have the 1987? A good year?

The 1987 is a good vintage.

Now as to the variations. There is a slight difference in flavors and notes from year to year, but the overall quality remains very close to the same. But there was different water, different grain, different seasons, different casks.

If you like the sherry kind of whisky, I think that the only thing really wrong with it is the price these days. So, I would always try to buy any vintage as cheap as you can.

We've had the '73, '78-'85, and '87. They are all excellent (9+/10).

I've only had a mini of the '85 vintage. This was a lovely dram and a Mac18 is now high on my purchase soon list.

If the '87 is anything like it, you can buy it with confidence...

You really want to try and get the vintages from and 1984 and earlier, as these were true vintages, i.e. every drop of whisky in the bottle actually came from the stated year.

Once 1985 came around, they stopped being true vintages and actually started to put whisky into the vatting that was older than 18 years old.
