Has anyone heard of Clan Denny 5yr Vatted Islay malt? It's selling at the Summerhill LCBO @ $80+ for a 5yr old!!!!

Gee, unless it's something super special that I haven't heard of, I can't wait to see if it sells.

That's nothing, the BCLDB is soon going to be introducing Glen Elgin 12 YO for C$135! For a 12 year old, who do they think they are Longrow????

Right next door in Alberta they are offering the exact same bottle for C$60.

Pirates.

I think the 12yr Glen Elgin was about $60 over here while it was stocked. Jeez, $135?

Clan Denny et other bottlings

Postby Wendy » Fri Oct 27, 2006 1:32 pm

Well, Frodo, we certainly are on the same page with regards to noticing the new bottling of the vatted malt Clan Denny at the LCBO. It also caught my attention last night when I was at the Queen's Quay store. I thought it sounded good...vatted malt of Linkwood, Dufftown, Mortlach and Glendullan retail price of $88.95.

Other bottlings that caught my eye were Stronachie 12 yo (Highland, single malt, C$79.25) and Tamdhu (single malt Speyside, C$41.95).

I paid a bargain price for the Glen Elgin when it was on the LCBO shelves. I bought the bottling when it was under the "product discontinued status." I believe it was around the friendlier C$60.00 mark.

I am also interested on hearing what others think of the above 3 bottlings (Clan Denny, Stronachie and Tamdhu).

Cheers,
Wendy

That's about C$60 depending on the daily exchange rate.

Interesting as the back of the Clan Denny bottle indicates it is a 5yr vatted Islay Malt.

Speyside and Islay Clan Denny

Postby Wendy » Sat Oct 28, 2006 1:23 pm

Frodo, Badmonkey and I met up at the Summerhill Tasting Tower last night and discovered that there are two bottlings of the Clan Denny: a Speyside and an Islay.

Cheers,

The islay version contains Bunnahabhain, Bowmore, Caol Ila and Laphroaig. Not a cheap vatting for sure (whose is?) but I haven't tasted it yet and perhaps it is very good.

Just figured out it's a D. Laing bottling. Those are seldom cheap, but $80+ for a 5yr vatted?

Well, the UK retail price for the Clan Denny Vatted Malts are £29.99, so it's anyone's guess as to why the LCBO is selling it at $80!! :?

In my experience, Douglas Laing bottlings (as with other IBs) are expensive for young whiskies but very good value for older whiskies when compared to OBs. Personally, I try to ignore the age of a whisky and pay for the whisky on its own merits. I'd rather pay £60 for a top notch 12yo than for a forgettable 20yo.

I agree with this statement 100%. Unfortunatly I ascociate young whiskies with alcohol burn/bite and so won't buy without trying first.

I guess I'm wondering why the higher price for a 5yr old? It's not like you're paying for decades of angel's share...

It's about $2 cdn to the GBP, so almost the equivilent of $60 cdn - I'd even question the UK price for a 5yr old.

I've heard S. Laing is coming to Toronto and an oppurtunity to try the Clan Denny Islay. Call me tempted. I have a pair of tickets to see a concert - choices, choices...

Because the LCBO is a government monopoly.

Dont forget that for a vatted malt or blend a bottler can only state the age of the youngest whisky on the label, there could be whiskies in there that are alot older.

Hello Susan,
That is too bad that you won't be traveling to Toronto with Stewart Laing. I am looking forward to the tasting event. The four whiskies that we will be sampling are: Clan Denny Islay, The Glenlivet 20 yo, St. Magdalene 23 yo, Port Ellen 23 yo. It should be a great night.

Cheers,
Wendy

Ya, I know that when I saw that line-up, I was mighty tempted. If I didn't get my concert tickets first, I would go for this like a shot!! As it stands, I have a decision to make...

Hi Frodo: Well, I know it isn't quite the same, but we can always meet up later that week for a chat about seeing that you have bought your concert tickets.

Wendy

P.S. Harry...can you make it?
