Brora 1981 Signatory

Postby peergynt323 » Fri Nov 17, 2006 8:44 am

I saw it at the Whisky Shop San Francisco for $165. I have never tried Brora before, but I like Clynelish, and I feel like I MUST know what it's like. Is this a good expression? It's a decent price for a closed distillery. Plus it's my birth year. Any other good reasonably priced Brora expressions? Is this anything like the ones that everyone's obsessed with?

Signatory have bottled a lot of Brora from 1981, on the whole they have a good reputation but individuals can vary. I've had 2 so far one was quite peaty the other very fruity both Sig 1981s. I still tend to see the RM Brora 77 21 as the template for post 1975 Brora but the bottle you have found is probably worth a crack. Get more details;age cask no. etc and see if you can find notes at the Malt Maniacs sight or ratings on the malt matrix.

Here might be a better deal, even with shipping, at http://www.binnys.com

"Signatory Brora 1981-22yr Old Unchillfiltered
A rare gem from this now-shuttered distillery, we loved the rich, honey-like flavors so much, we bought the whole cask. The finish lasts forever.

750ML $129.99/btl $740.94/case "

I just love this one! It is complex to the nines, floral, early, very lighly peaty, malty, just stunning. One of the top three noses. I broke this out for some freinds one night, and we were speechless from the first nosing. Great mouth too. At the end of the evening, I ordred the back up bottle immediatly.

I've got a bottle of this lurking unopened in my cupboard. I sampled it on one of my visits to LFW and thought it was brilliant (which is why I bought a bottle there and then!)
I'm working my way slowly towards it :D

That fellow's very persuasive, isn't he, C? I had a sample of that at LFW, too, and will throw in my own "awesome" and such. I was going to order myself one for Christmas, then decided it cost too much, now reconsidering.... pg, grab it. You won't be sorry.

I've had this one:

Brora 1981 21yo Signatory 46% abv (1981-2003)

I thought it was unique and worthy. It was one I just had to try while still available and glad I did. My only other Brora was a '82 Cadenhead C/S which was a powerhouse.

It's listed as

Brora 21 Year Old
Signatory Vintage Bottling.1981.Unchill-filtered.

I believe that's the one. I'm gonna have to snatch it up over the weekend. Thanks for all the rec's. I though perhaps the guy at the store was pushing it on me cuz he figured I couldn't afford the $300 Broras he had.
