Lagavulin White Horse 16

Ok, old timers (and I say this with love and respect). Any comparisions between the early 1990s White Horse 16yoLaga and the current 16yo? Based upon first hand expereince? I have read a bit, but wanted to see if anyone had any impressions.

Also, any sense of how hard it is to get, and how much it might be worth?

As far as I can remember the only change was the bottling, still the same great whisky. If you happen to stumble on any of those old bottlings it won't be cheap, the 12yo 80's bottlings are fetching for around $900.

I remember White Horse slightly more complex and Port Ellen is slightly smokier.

I haven't made a head-to-head comparison, but I don't remember of perceiving a major difference. However, the difference will probably more pronouced with the Laga 16YO to come, since the barley used now for Lagavulin is peated at 35 ppm and it was 40+ until some time ago.

Still wondering how much this might be worth. Appoximlate year, 1992; just got it in the mail yesterday.

According to the records of Whiskyauction.com, 4 of the 16yos were sold ranging from 115-145 euros. Not sure about McTears (sp.?) auctions. As you know, value depends on many factors such as condition of bottle, seal, evaporation, box, etc... One old Lagavulin 12yo fetched 600+ euros.

Yeah, that's about right, they're going for about 425 quid at the Whisky Exchange. If only I had a little insight 20+ years ago when I was buying it for only $30USD a bottle.

At least I still have a miniature of it which I'm opening tonight to celebrate the New Year! :wink:
