Anybody try the Glenmorangie Sherry Finish? Notes? Worth it?

For me its okay and one of those whiskies that when its gone you are not too bothered. The port wood is much better. As is the Burgundy finish.

Here are some notes I made on New Year's Eve

A little vertical tasting of some Glenmorangie wood finishes.

I had a dram of the Glenmorangie 10 in a separate glass for comparison.

Madeira Wood Finish
Nose: Fresh farmhouse cheese, malt vinegar, oak
Taste: Initially sweet, then drying to an oaky, spicy taste. A hint of the ginger and chocolate orange that I love about Glenmorangie.
Finish: Disappointingly short but spicy, warm and sweet
Overall: Doesn't improve on the standard 10yo but a pleasing dram nevertheless.

Burgundy Wood Finish
Nose: Surprisingly spirity. I didn't want to water it so I didn't get much more than a touch of oak. Nosing the empty glass gave me some of the malt vinegar I thought I detected in the Madeira wood.
Taste: Drier than the Madeira finish. Initially bitter and not very pleasant, giving way to tastes of nuts and sweet dried dates. Odd.
Finish: The best bit. Long, like preserved stem ginger!
Overall: Disappointing. Worth the experiment but not worth bottling!

Port Wood Finish
Nose: Dates, marzipan, Christmas cake
Taste: Vanilla ice-cream?
Finish: Sweet, treacly and oily
Overall: The best of the wood finishes so far. I'll definitely buy a bottle or two of this.

Sherry Wood Finish
Nose: Nuts and vanilla
Taste: vanilla ice-cream?
Finish: Shorter than the Port Wood finish
Overall: Pleasant but it's not Glenmorangie's strongest effort. It either needs more time in sherry casks or about two years fewer

It's ok. My Glenmorangie finish of choice is definitely the spicy Madeira.

I have to say that I wasn't particularly taken with the sherry finish. It was OK and I would drink it quite happily - but I wouldn't go out and buy a bottle.

It's a very variable bottling....some releases are wonderful, others seem a little flat.

The Madeira and Port expressions seem to be a little more consistent.

Like others, I've tried the sherry finish, and it doesn't come close to the port finish IMHO. Not bad on it's own merits...

Had the sherry finish in a mini just last night and felt it was a bit thin, especially when compared to the standard 10YO which is rich and fruity.

I liked it years ago 'til I tried the Port Wood, which i've recently returned to.
Well worth it...especially at under £20 from Tesco's!

I try it once every so often. Always a letdown. I think the subtlelty of GLenmorangie are ill-suited for a Sherry finish.....

I'd have to agree, the Port wood is definitely my favorite. I do like the
Sherry Finish, and I would suggest trying it, if you can get a deal on it. Or sample someone elses.
