Sad to see empty…

Finished off my Laphroaig 10 y/o last night. What a fantastic whisky that is. Will be buying myself a replacement one very soon. The bottle was only open for three weeks and the last few drams were very different from the first few, kind of more watery? But I enjoyed the whole bottle immensely. I have one in reserve but I like to replace before opening another. Might not be able to hold out on this one though.

Strangely enough, I still have the empty bottle in the cupboard!!! Might go and have a sniff..

Yamazaki 18 -- sadly the 12 doesn't come close.... and the 18 is about 3 times as much :cry:

Ardbeg Uigeadail (2004) and Lagavulin 12yo (2003, 2004). Although not particularly rare, they are getting harder to find around here. With every bottle I finish I am one step closer to saying goodbye forever to those bottles that have made my journey so wonderful.

The holiday season put a good dent in my stock and I was very sad to see the end of these:

Oliver,
I will have a dig around as I remember posting about the Glenfarclas QC quite some months ago, but Laphroaig did a great job of marketing QC, albeit "Finished" in QC for something like 7 months.

The Glenfarclas has been matured exclusively in Quarter Casks and the article I found at the time explained how the SMWS began by someone visitng Glenfarclas distillery and seeing some small casks (QC's) in the corner of a warehouse and enquiring what they were. It turned out that they had always been used for the "Private" drams for the local Gentry.

Said chappie bought one, shared it with friends and the rest, as they say, is history.

This particular QC is a limited edition of only 1299 bottles, it comes not in a box, but in a straw condom (for want of a better term) and is absolutely wonderful, so long as you like full-flavoured whisky tasting of old oak, old books, leather, an old English study and of course, sherry!

Anybody have any idea how many bottles you get out of a quarter cask? Will a single cask bottling only have 25-50 bottles in it??

If Glenfarclas quarter cask is to Speyside what Laphroaig quarter cask is to Isla then I absolutely must have some .
I wonder if they make different bottlings are available.....Or is it just a private bottling....

Bruichladdich Vintage 1970, opened oct 15th 2005, so now open 14 months. Cannot bring myself to take the last drams out of that bottle.
But it has to go sooner or later I guess, in this case probably sooner. I wont risk it going flat on me.

Surely one hell of a 'Laddie' and one of the best (if not the best) bourbon matured malts I've ever tasted

I wouldn't mind replacing the bottle, but it's getting harder to find one. Last time I saw a couple of them on a shelf, they were at £150,- :shock:

a Quarter Cask is 125 litres as opposed to the normal 500 litres.

So a quarter cask is based on 1/4 of a sherry butt, which makes sense.

I was on aberlours web site and they laid out the sizes of barrels like this

Butts - 500 liters
Puncheons 450 liters
Hogsheads - 250 liters
American Barrels - 180 liters
Quarters - 127 liters
Octaves - 45 liters

I guess that site answered the question for me too.

Bowmore 17 last night...but i'm sure it'll come around again. Wasn't as hard to finish however, as a quite wonderful 22 YO 46% "First Cask" bowmore gifted me two Xmasses ago. Unique...

My SMWS "Rasta Malt" ( a 36 YO Longmorn), never to be repeated, is getting perilously close to the end...all i can do is take an occasional sip, marvel and get sad!

You may want to get that 17 soon since they are going to replace it in the UK with a 18 yr old bottling.

HP 18. I have to wait till we go to France on holiday each year to replace it. It's about £35 in the supermarkets instead of £60 here. Maybe I should buy two next summer.

Sad to see empty? That's just about every bottle I've had other than the ones I listed in the other thread.

One recent bottle in particular over which I shed a tear or two was the Glenlivet Nadurra. This one has some serious bite to it, although with the right amount of water it's just link drinking apple pie. I was very pleased that PA decided to stock it. I'll be picking up a replacement soon. At $55, I think a pretty good deal.

I knew it wouldn't be long and this evening was the time.
That lovely Glenfarclas QC is now empty. ALthough I did give my very last dram from the bottle away!

An odd one this .... I've just poured the last splash of Glenmorangie 10 from the bottle. I'm not going to open another one for a while, there are some neglected malts here that I should attend to before I sample more of this nectar ....
