Lagavulin 25 Year Old

I am looking to buy something "special" as a birthday present (for myself!!).

I am not a Whisky expert - indeed, far from it, but I do enjoy heavy, peaty whiskeys (e.g. Lagavuilin, Laphroaig, Talisker).

Was thinking of spending £170 on a Lagavulin 25 yr old.

Would the more knowledgeable people on here endorse that choice, or perhaps suggest something different????

Personally i was very disappointed in the Laga 25yo when it first came out , Don't know if it's changed as i would assume there have been different releases .
Just a few Thoughts .....
Caol Ila 25yo ( Cracking dram , have had the two releases so far both very good) .
Brora 30yo ( haven't actually had these but all the peet-heeds i know rave on about it ) .
LFW's Living Cask Anniversary Offering (ok it's a vatted Malt , but i tell you the 1981 Brora and 1976 Glenlivet are great !) .

I agree with Gordon...the Lagavulin 25yo was a little disappointing when it first came out. I last tried it in 2005, and I thought it was a little dry and tired. The life and bounce seemed to have been sucked out of the malt.

Of course, I could tolerate this if it only cost around $150, but since it was over $450 at the time, I figured it wasn't worth it.

Lag 16 over the 25 for me. When I first tried the 25 I have to say I was extremely disapointed. Thankfully though my first encounter of the 25 was in a hotel bar so didn't have the disapointment of realising that I had paid a small fortune for a bottle which was to be honest nothing to write home about.

What about one of the Bruichladdich 1970's there's two versions around at the moment. For just under £200 it makes a nice present to yourself.
