With Spirit of Speyside fast approaching was wondering who was going and to what events?

It starts a week on saturday, I think there are a few events on thursday and friday but most of it is over the weekend.

This is mentioned in another thread in this forum but I'm going.

Am booked on whisky and salmon, Indie challenge, Tomintoul Vertical, Douglas Laing (be sure to go to this), Whisky and Cheese, Adelphi tasting (This company's whiskies are brilliant), Macallan vertical, Duncan Taylor tasting (always entertaining) and the dregs party (sold out - nehhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!).

I'll have another go at writing a report for the http://www.dufftown.co.uk website.

Unfortunately I'm not going - saving up for our later trip to Scotland. From middle of July and onwards.
Plan to go to the Autumn Speyside Festival instead like last year. Hope to meet some of you (again) there.
I'm sure i saw you (BruceCrichton) at the Adelphi and/or DTC tastings last september, but we didn't talk. Hope to make it up next time.

I had my 50th birthday on the sunday. Me and my wife had a nice meal at "Glenfiddich Restaurant" where John McAlpin managed to get a nice birthday cake for me. Later in the pub Mark Watt of DTC gave me a nice Glenfarclas of half my age

Fri - Dufftown distillery tour - Glen Grant 70 decades tasting at Gordon and Macphail

Sat - Tamdhu and Macallan visits - Glenlivet Masterclass

Sun - Aberlour Masterclass - and perhaps gatecrash the wildlife walk to get there if the weather is nice

Mon - Glenfarclas Masterclass - Glenrothes visit

I booked late - I had hoped to be going to Albania but that fell through - and some of the events that I might have gone to had sold out. But from talking to people last year, you can often do well by taking a punt on what is still available. Sometimes the events that sound least exciting turn into gems and some of the ones that sound hot can disappoint.

Do ask for me on the Dufftown tour. I am really looking forward to that one as it is a distillery with such a poor reputation and I really want to know how they "sell" it.

There are plenty of tastings left over and the whisky fair is a good way of whiling away a few hours.

Be sure to grab bottles while you can.

You must mean Browns A fantastic place for everything - and not a bad wine list either. They seem to cater for just about everything you can imagine. The Co-op had a not bad range of whisky as well.

Aah it appears good hearted banter is out of the window now that Nick is back posting ! No one is slagging off the SOS festival especially me , i just didn't make allowances for you sense of humour ! And it shows how little you know when you say i only like two distilleries . Anyone one who knows me (and i'm glad to say your not one ) knows that i like a multitude of distilleries not just those on Islay .

a group of us have booked up and we even booked a meal at the lochside for ourselfs last year for this year as its always bloody full.

heading to campeltown the day before and staying at the balinkill the night before catching the ferry, three weeks and im looking forward to it allready....

i know, a year in advance..... well maybe about 10.5 - 11 months to be more spot on.

its just everytime you try to get a meal there its always booked out. not that it metters too much as the machrie is great and never fully booked, well never fully booked when weve went.

Aah so that's why so many speyside distilleries are emulating Islay whiskies by bringing out peated versions and finishing in Islay casks...... glad that's cleared up LOL!

I didn't go on the distillery tours, the masterclasses, the meals etc....that's for another year...I went to check out the distillery visitor centres and to buy collectable bottles.

Went to Benromach, Glen Moray, Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Macallan, and Cardu and bought to collect

a Glen Moray Mountain Oak Final Release, one of 1158 bottles,
a Balvennie Single Barrel 15YO, one of 350 bottles,
a MacAllan 15YO winter bottling, 1 of 585 bottles
an Aberlour A'Bunadh from Batch 17.

There were lots of other very collectable bottles, but I had a budget!! I by chance spotted an opportunity for a 50YO whisky at a good price. If I get it, I'll post about it.

I bought to drink a Benromach 5YO Tokaji Wood Finish (perhaps a mistake...I haven't tasted it yet) and a Glenfiddich Gran Reserva 21YO.

I tasted a Tomatin 21YO Antiquary, the Glen Moray Mountain Oak and the Glenfiddich Gran Reserva.

The Antiquary was nice. The Mountain Oak (a bourbon finish) and the Gran Reserva (a Cuban rum finish) were superb.

Bourbon and rum are excellent finishes and make very pleasant changes from sherry and peat......depite what Jim Murray says about rum!!

It was beautiful weather and my wife drove as it was my birthday.....a very enjoyable day indeed.
