Ardbeg Spirit of Scotland

Postby atoto » Wed May 16, 2007 12:24 am

Has anyone ever had or seen an Ardbeg 1979 "Spirit of Scotland" 54.8% Cask# 9850 bottled by G&M in 2005?

I was in a NYC liquor store yesterday and it was on sale for $210. Is this a good deal or is it an average bottling with an expensive price tag?

I cannot speak to it directly, and I did not see that particular bottle in the malt maniacs moniter. Most of the older Spirt of Scotland bottelings seem to be rated fairly highly.

I found this on the binnys website, so the price that you are looking at is VERY good, as binnys is at least usually competative. You can call Brett up at binnys (their scotch guy) and ask him about the bottle, he is pretty much a straight shooter. If you do buy that, I am sure a trading partner or two might have interest . :)

Spirit of Scotland Ardbeg 1979-25yr Old Cask Strength
An outstanding release from Gordon & Macphail.

750ML $299.99/btl $1,706.94/case

I'm not certain it was the same bottle, but I had a sample of SOS Ardbeg from Joe Howell. In fact, I may still have half of it...I'm afraid I've lost track of a few things here in the Midden Heap. I can't give you a first-hand recommendation, but Joe raved about it--said it was better than the legendary Provenance.

I too had an Ardbeg 1979/2005 Spirit of Scotland GM (sorry this was all the info I wrote down at the time) at FWS in Boston. It was very good but for me it was not $200.00 better than the Uigeadial. Wish I could be more certain that the bottle you are talking about was the one I had. In short, the bottle I had was very good, but not fantastically good which a $200.00 price tag commands for me.
