Change of label on Glenrothes malts

Postby Gene Wentworth » Tue Aug 14, 2007 9:16 pm

Neither my liquor store owner nor his distributors can tell me why Glerothes has decided to put the terminology of "Special Reserve" on their newest label and eliminated the well-served "time in the cask" and "date when bottled" identification. On the most recent of my purchases, there is the absence of any age statement. Is there any connection between these changes and the quality of Glenrothes to which I have long been accustomed. Also, I must have done something wrong when I submitted my Q & A topic on 24 July '07.....wherein I asked if anyone in the Forum new anything about a recently released Lismore that seems to be an excellent Speyside malt but none of the "experts" have yet to say anything about Lismore in the Whisky Magazine or elsewhere. I have had not one response to this inquiry and I have an opportunity to purchase a 21 yer old liter bottle of Lismore that my retailer just got into stock. HELP....where have I erred in asking for help ??? :?: Killeen Gene Col Inf

Hi Gene

Welcome to the forums.

Sorry to hear that you did not get any answers on your first question.

But can't seem to find the post you refer to - it seems that you have made two posts - this one and one where you asks about Michael Collins malt - and get a few answers?

As far as I know there is no distillery called "Lismore". In other words; if this is labelled a single malt, it is what is known as a "mystery malt"; a malt that due to legal reasons can't be called by it's distillery name.

On a danish site, I have seen Lismore believed to be a young Glenrothes.
I also sneaked about a bit here and found this that answers your question:
http://www.whiskymag.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=134

As for your question regarding Glenrothes Select reserve, I did a quick check in the faq and found these two threads dealing with this bottling:

http://www.whiskymag.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3962
http://www.whiskymag.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2569

They should answer your question.

Hope this helps

Only know of the Lismore without an age statement on the bottle.

The nose was honey and vanilla

The palate i found to be dry, not overpowering, with some sherry and vanilla.

The finish was nice, it dissipated slowly.

For about 20 bucks a bottle it was a great deal. Now you have a 21 year old in the litre bottle. If the price is right it might be a good one to try. I probably would having liked its younger sibling

However that my opinion and i might be wrong

As Jan has stated, Lismore is not a distillery. Reports are that the NAS (no age statement) Lismore is a vatting of young Glenrothes casks, less than 8 yo. I have had the opportunity to try the Lismore 21; it is more complex than the NAS but I'm not sure if it is good enough for the price difference - here it is $14-15 for the NAS and $80 for the 21 (750 ml). If you can get a price ratio of more like 3:1 (21:NAS) than consider getting the 21.

Hi there,

one of the many alias lists on the internet states that Lismore is a 5yo Glenrothes.

Hi,

the Glenrothes Select Reserve is the first Non Vinatge and made for the US Market in 2005. It is a vatted from the distillery, which present the taste of the distillery. It is a mixture from the 70s, 80s and 90s Glenrothes and has no age. This Select Reserve was created by John Sutherland the distillery manager, who died january this year. The Select Reserve is since 2006 available overall in the world. On my webpage their is a profile from the Select Reserve:

I can confirm, that the Lismore as well is a Glenrothes.

If you having more questions regarding Glenrothes don't hestitate to write me an email. FYI - From 18th august I am for two weeks on vacation

I'm not sure how good this statement is. I actually purchased a bottle of Lismore 5 yo and have seen a 12 yo for sale on-line.
