Glenlivet 15 French Oak

Postby Elagabalus » Sat Nov 24, 2007 11:27 pm

Each week I try to purchase and sample a SMS or Blend that I haven't tried before.

This weekend was Glenlivet 15 French Oak.

I am not a big fan of this at all. I found it rather fiery.

I seem to have some inherent dislike for any whisky that begins with "Glen". Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Glenord. However I recall enjoying the 18yo Glenlivet but at that pricepoint I am more inclined to go with a bottle of Lagavulin 16 or my latest love the DE.

Any opinions on the 15yo French Oak from Glenlivet or Glenlivet's other offerings?

I'm afraid Glenlivet 15yo French Oak Reserve makes me thing of British Airways lounges and Glenlivet 18yo makes me think of British Midland lounges.

Glenlivet does some super stuff - especially the older, sherried stuff, but sometimes familiarity is unhelpful. The younger vintages are naturaly fruity and I'm not sure the 15yo needs the extra fruit from the "French Oak".

It didn't do much for me. The 18 is good but the best I tried was the 48% Nadurra from duty free earlier this year. Hopefully they'll re-issue it as I can't seem to find it now.

My dad's in America now. He's just bought me the Nadurra Cask Strength (57.6) Should be Good

Now I just have to wait till he gets back!

The only Glenlivet I have tried so far is the Glenlivet 15 French Oak - and I rather like it :) I also have a bottle of the Nadurra (48%) but the 15 had a lovely fruit compot-like taste which I quite enjoyed. I'd love to try the 18/Archive/XXXV also but they are not available where I live.

The French Oak is excellent when served alongside a strong tasting meat dish.
I have used it with both duck & lamb and both were superb combinations.
