What do you think of the Bowmore 12 yr old?

It's a wonderful malt. It has the elegance of a speysider and the punch of a true Islay. Well balanced with aromas I can nose forever.

One of the best core expressions of any distillery (not forgetting Lagavulin!) in my opinion.

That's excellent - they are selling it for 30 euro with a free hip flask and cigar holders down the road for me, so I'll have to get it.

Hi Aidan,

The Bowmore 12Y old is a damn good buy. Maybe you can also try the bowmore "Cask Strength and the Bowmore "Darkest", while the Bowmore "Surf" is not so bad either...

It seems like an all-round thumbs up. They are selling it in Tesco in Dundrum, Dublin, Ireland.

do they have the same deal in your neck of the woods?

All the Tescos in Ireland seem to have different ranges of whisky. Some better than others, needless to say.

Hello,

For my part i enjoy a lot all the Bowmores i have tasted, especially the 12 y.o. (one of the most well-balanced single malt between delicacy and strength, between "sea and land", with a wonderful flavour and quality/price ratio -about 25 euros in France- in my opinion).
And also the Mariner 15 y.o. and the Darkest.

But i've never heard about the "Dawn", "Dusk" and "Surf" !?...
Could someone learn me about them ?

I bought it and loved it. It has a lovely sweet finish - and I have a sweet tooth I suppose. There are not other single malts available at the price, so I thought it was well worth my money.

I'll deffinately try the Legend, Darkest or 17 year old on your advice, however. Maybe they'll leave the Bowmore 12 standing.

I have to strike in with Bruce.

From four Bowmores I have had Surf and 12yo are somewhat disappointing especially if I think of value/price ratio. 17yo and Darkest are more expensive but still they offer to me much more.

Bowmore 12 isn't bad but, as I said, it seems to be trying to be all things to all men.

The 17 yr old is the best of the non-finished ones that I've tried. The 15 yr is okay and I might buy the next time my local shop has it on offer while the Legend offers excellent value for money.

I prefer the Darkest of the Dawn/Dusk/Darkest trilogy. I haven't had any others.

Bowmore Legend may certainly be cheaper, but I find there is such a quantum leap in quality between Legend and 12yo that I don't believe the Legend is worth a look-in. It seems very young and firey, and doesn't have the balance or smoothness of its older brothers.

Dawn is aged in Port casks, and Dusk in Claret casks ... just some wood finishing ...

surf has something to do with a warehouse closer to the sea than the other ones or something like that if I'm not mistaking...

I stand by my view on the Legend. It does taste very young but it is fresh and has plenty of power albeit not in the class of Laphroaig or Ardbeg in that respect.

The 12 yr old is just neither one thing nor another and just doesn't work in my view.
