I always try to work my way up in strength and flavours.
Something you might find helpful regarding the products of distilleries that you haven't tried before, is to start with their youngest / most common OB.
Admittedly, my engineering background probably predisposes me to be ridgedly analytical, but I find by starting with the youngest or most common bottling it helps me to appreciate the refinements (or defects) of added age and specialty finishes.
It also helps to keep from bleeding the bank account dry and gives you a rough idea of what is common and what is different between the various regions.
Theoretically, a progression from simpler to more complex flavor profiles.
