The Malt Whisky File by Robin Tucek and John Lamond is now available in Canada at http://www.singlemalt.ca. This is the latest edition and so far it has been very well reviewed and I've heard very good things from everyone who has read it.
Yes its a nice book. Stylistically similar to Michael Jackson's Malt whisky companion, but obviously more up to date than the 5th (and last) edition of that book. It does not score the whisky, but does rate it in terms of sweetness, peatiness and price. It's a useful reference I think.
Not a book I would talk anybody out of buying but I would point out that this 'remarkable piece of research' (from the back page quote by The Scotsman newspaper) and 'fully revised' edition has reviews of some expressions that are very old. Eg a 1978 Auchroisk at 12yo from a single cask. If the guide is to be of use to people wanting to purchase the exact bottlings reviewed not all of the entries are up to date. I minor complaint as most of the reviews are for recent or current bottles. I suppose this feature would be helpful if trying to build a picture of a malt as time goes by or if thinking of buying an expensive one-of at auction. I'd better write a book before I slag any off.
