Longmorn 16

Postby Ganga » Wed Jan 30, 2008 6:00 am

I stopped by the Wine & Liquor Depot today as I had to pick up the kids in the general area. I noticed they had the new Longmorn 16 in stock. The price...$92. In the previous 6 mos. I have seen the old 15 around for $45 to 60. So I have to ask, is the 16 that much better or are we paying for the new packaging this drastically? Or is it the weak dollar?

I tried the 16 at Whisky Live last year, I do think it is better than the old 15, but only just. It's certainly not that much better.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will hold off on this for a little bit.

I better pick up a 15 before they are gone. I haven't tried any Longmorn yet, and it seems that my time may be running out to get one in the store.

You can get a lot for $92USD....

A 16yo standard release does not seem to be on the top of the list.

Just have to see if it can be tried at a show.

I haven't tried or even seen the 16 yet, but unless my memory is false, JM rubbished it and said it was a big step backwards from the 15 (or something like that).

If I remember rightly Williie, he said it was like meeting a girl, expecting a great shag, and all she does is chew gum and look at her watch...

Now I've only snuck a peek at the book, I don't own the 2008 yet, as it MAY have been another whisky, but I'm pretty certain it was the Longmorn 16, because it is a great distillery, and the 15, if you can find it, IS great, so knowing it's being discontinued, i was especially keen to see what JM thought of the new 16.

the packaging looks a bit OTT, and doubtless expensive in itself.

go for the 15 while you can!

Good memory RB!

I have found the book and he says much about this dram but finishes off with the statement that you remember. He also says 'dull and characterless', 'charisma bypass' and 'hugely disappointed'. Gives it a 78. I don't think he was impressed.

£50 in UK

When you think what you CAN get for fifty quid?!?!?

Even a Nadurra is only £35 for a Litre. (in duty free granted but still)

Aye, 'tis wise methinks to wait 'til i'm offered one to sample. £50 is a lot to part with on a whim. OTOH I forked out £39 for a Mac FO15 due to Jim's eulogies, and 95 score, and was somewhat disappointed.

He also hated the new Bowmore 18, which I loved when offered 2 generous samples at the vintage House. As I recall, the finish lasted all the way to Croydon East...that's a walk to Oxford Circus from Soho, a tube to victoria, and a train to Croydon.

OTOH the finish on the 'Farclas 15( a "JM" 95 also as I recall) was gone by the time i reached Tottenham Court Road station from Milroy's - a 7 minute walk at most.

so there you go! What does Serge say about the Longmorn 16?

At least we all agree the 15 is mighty fine...and still less than £40 whan last I spied a flagon o' the stuff...

It's on Shopper's Vineyard for $57.99, but it doesn't say if it comes with the box. It is even accompanied by a quote from Martine Nouet, Whisky Magazine.

I am not sure why they have it so cheap. I do know that they just got it in and only had one bottle on the shelf.
