Comparing Balvenie 10 FR to Balvenie 15 SB

I really like the sweet, honey profile of the FR. How does the 15 SB compare to it?

This is really a trick question. Or really a trick response.

It depends. The 15 SB, being a single cask can be very different from cask to cask. You could get one that matched the flavor profile of the 10yo, and the next 15 you get can be very different.

'you never know what you are gonna get'

I like the 15 SB, and exploring the different casks.

I see your point mikey. I like both the FR and DW so I doubt I'd be disappointed with the 15 SB. I guess I'll have to just pick up a bottle to settle it!

Cheers to that t-bone. I have 3 different cask numbers of the 15yo at home right now. I will be trying them side by side for the on-line tasting this weekend.

I have only had one cask (out of 6) that was not very good. All the rest have been great, so your odds are good to pick a good one.

I think the FR and the SB have some great things in common, and have some good differences. The things in common are the Balvenie house style. Both share a rich honey and vanilla taste. I think the wood is there, but it does not overwhelm the whisky. They both are well balanced (99% of the time with the SB). Some of the differences: 47.8% ish ABV for the SB, 43% for the FR. The FR has a consistent profile, where as the SB usually only has small variances but it is different cask to cask. Lastly the FR, to me, has a little hint of smoke on the taste. The whisky finnishes with a lingering taste of smoke. I haven't really seen that much in the SB's.

I love them both, so IMHO you cant go wrong.

Cheers!
