Old Pulteney 17 & 21?

I searched the forums, but couldn't find out much about these. They just recently appeared in the area and I think I'd like to try them both. Any comments or comparisons to the 12yo? I thought the saltiness of the 12yo was a bit too unbalanced, but that has been awhile ago. According the their website the 21yo has some Fino sherry barrels in it (which should give it a dry oaky finish which I like), the 17yo has PX & Oloroso (I'm thinking rich, dried fruits) and what I didn't realize was that the 12yo was matured wholly in ex-bourbon. I'll have to open my 12yo to see if it still has that salty theme. Anyone been through the whole range?

I have had the 12 and the 17. The 17 is maybe a wee bit better, but definately not worth the price difference. Both are very similar to each other. The 17 may be a bit fruiter and less sea like? I love the 12!

agreed. i've had the 21 was well. don't get me wrong, i think it is a fine scotch, but not worth the money when the 17 and 12 are equally as good (if not better) and less expensive. I personally enjoy the 12 the best, i love saltiness/sea air taste. I tend to drink it while I'm at my parent's beach house, perfect setting.

I like all 3 and definitely think the 17 is worth a go because it is the best of the 3 IMO. However, you just can't beat the 12 for value.

I really have nothing to add but to second, er third, er fourth the comments above. The 17 is a step or two ahead in quality but 12 is significantly less. Both will provide you reminders of being by the seashore.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll get both and put them back for future perusing. I just don't have enough Northern Highland malts aside from Clynelish and Glenmorangie anyway. And they do have a style all their own, generally speaking. By the way, these are priced at $77US and $98US, respectively, so that seems a bargain right there.

The 17yo is, from memory, much sweeter than the 12 with flavours of icing sugar and white chocolate. The 21yo is beefier but not as well integrated. I seem to recall it has some sherry contenty, but that could just be my memory playing tricks with me.
