Ardbeg 1977

A shop near me has a bottle of Ardbg 1977 on sale for $NZ250 (about 125 euro). Should i buy it for this price? I dont think i would keep it as an investment, i would probably hold onto it for a year or so and wait for an appropriate time to open it with my firends. Do you think it is as good as its cracked up to be, or would i be better buying something cheaper for a whisky i plan on opening?

That's a very decent price for an Ardbeg 77. I once bought a bottle (6-7 years ago) for £66 in Aberdeen. Just under £100 is a deal with todays prices.

If you enjoy older Ardbegs, buy it and drink it with your good friends.

Ardbeg 77 is a very good whisky indeed. It is hugely complex with all sorts of sweet, fruity, chocolatey flavours underneath the sweet peat. It's easily worth £100 as a drinking whisky and a useful education in the difference between a truly great whisky and some of the ordinary stuff we sometimes think to be good.

€125 for a '77 is a good price and, as others have said, it is a very good whisky.
Definitely buy it for that price no matter what you wish to do with it, drink or save.

Go for it!! I too paid £65 for mine, 2/3 years ago. I drank it VEEERRRY slowly!

Excellent stuff. If you love the Ardbeg 10 as much as I, you'll love this. Similar of course, but with so many more subtleties beneath the surface.

I would almost go so far as to say that the '77 is to the 10, what the Talisker 18 is to the T10...but maybe more so!

An Ardbeg 1977 went for approximately 450 Euros at a Swedish auction a year ago. I think that 45o was over the top and you can get them a cheaper, but 125 Euros is a really good price.

I would buy the bottle at once. The older Ardbegs are really fantastic.

Yesterday was quite a disappointing day for me. I went back to the shop to pick up the Ardbeg 1977 and it had already sold

Sorry to hear that - learning point for the future is to strike while the iron is hot. Carpediem, etc.

Yes, that was a pity.
I checked my tasting log and it was actually 5 years ago (2003) I consumed a bottle of the 1977 version. At that time there weren't really expensive at all. I don't remember exactly how much I paid back then, but around 65 GBP as other have stated above might be right.
