What about Single or blended grain Whiskies?Any Favourites?

My favorite Canadian grain whisky at the moment is Forty Creek Premium Barrel Select. It is cheap too, but may be tough to find outside of Canada.

I'm currently halfway through a bottle of The Invergordon 10yo single grain. It doesn't beat a good malt but it can happily compete with an average one.

It's very light (no surprise), fruity and - with a drop of water - surprisingly smooth. After the first dram or two it becomes a bit bland but is pleasant in an unexceptional way.

I can't think of a malt to compare it with, so maybe it's distinctive in its own way.

Hedonism is very nice indeed, and beats quite a few malts, IMO. At the cheaper end, Cameron Brig is a good drink (slightly caramelly - which I mean in a good way, rather than thinking that it's had buckets of caramel dumped into it), as is Black Barrel (Girvan grain matured in a fresh charred barrel), which is quite bourbony (which makes sense, I suppose).

Agree on Hedonism. That one really opened my eyes as to how good grain whisky can be. Wonderful silky mouthfeel and in a different class from Invergordon, Black Barrel, etc.

Cameron Brig is very good and is most popular with blend drinkers.

Cadenhead's Cask strength 11 yr old is very good as well.

Hedonism is a gem.

North British is also excellent. I've had a cask strength version which I think was from Cadenhead's though I can't remember how old it was.

Port Dundas was bloody awful.

It was a long time since I've had these whiskies so I can't be more specific about their flavours.

I would also agree on Cameron Brig.We can get Hedonism in Canada,so I will have try it on my next visit to UK.I have had North British and thought highly of it.I wonder why they do not do a bottling of their own?I think it would sell.

One of my favorates is a Cambus 31yo (Cadenehead). I'm also especially fond of North of Scotland '62(Scott's made from 100% malted barley!). Who would have thought grain whisky could age so well.

The Scott's "North of Scotland" was distilled from 100% malted barley, but technically it's considered a grain whisky as it was distilled through a column still rather than in pot stills. I like it, but it will run $100US or more if you can find it.

Cadenhead's is a good source of single grain whiskies; they usually have a few different bottlings in stock.

Cameron Brig ordinary and Cadenhead's cask strength are both excellent.

North British is also good (I think it was from Cadenhead's).

Cadenhead's are the people to see for grain whisky in most cases.

I'm pretty sure a single (one distillery) malt (100% malted grain) does not require production be in a pot still even though it traditionally is. I'm not even sure the malted grain must be barley. The US has a single malt rye called Old Potrero.

Hello Frank,

I recently had the chance to taste Hedonism, since untill now, there was no importer in the Netherlands.

All I could say was....well nothing, because I couldn't believe what I was tasting!
This really is a great creation and made me understand that the Award for John Glaser is really well deserved!
