Ardbeg Lord of the Isles 25 YO: What is it worth?

Postby MacLlyr » Mon Jun 30, 2008 11:23 pm

How much should I expect to pay for a bottle of Ardbeg Lord of the Isles 25 yo. As well if anyone has information as to how limited this production is, and what years it was bottled that would be great.

Thanks

In Europe expect to pay between 200-300€ (price has increased the last year) from a retailer (it is also still available from the Ardbeg Web Shop).
Don´t know if it is available in the US.
Production might have halted with the 2007 edition but edition numbers are undisclosed AFAIK.
Since Ardbeg was out of production during most part of the 80s the content have been getting older and older and the L7 could probably have been branded with a higher age rating (and this is probably a good reason for halting the 25yr LOTI now and possibly re-brand it as an older vintage)
Even if there is no clear marking on the packaging the bottling year can often be decoded from the etching/marking on the bottle (can be hard to find though and the earliest bottlings might be unmarked)
Markings is a number series that starts with L1 etc (where L1 would be 2001 and L7 2007)
The earliest years 2001 (can be unmarked?),2002,2003 seems to be regarded highest together with the 2007 one.

The very last batch of Lord of the Isles has been bottled last month and the RRP is £195, but you can still find some of the previous batches for £145-150.

Iv just managed to pick myself one up for £125 excluding postage so im expecting around the £135 mark ish.

£140 seemed to be the average price of what i could find, but i have seen others for £170

Worst of it is - Ardbeg themselves still want £195 in their shop for it!

I still don't know how can can tell the different batches, whereas Ardbeg 10 has L7 L8 etc, the LOTI bottles don't seem to have any stamps on them.

LOTI i saw in Selfridges at the Bullring in Birmingham at £170, they are little expensive anyway, but certainly £145-£150 as others have said seems to be the price.

Wright wine and whisky has one at £145 batch unknown.

Just seen objetti's post, mine is definately unmarked, which could suggest its an earlier one. Don't know whether that is good or bad news.

Thank you all for your responses. I have found a bottle here in the states for about 350 USD, at first I thought that was a bit pricy, but with shipping and handling from Europe and the inability of Ardbegs shop to ship to the US and Canada I think I should jump on it.

I agree with C57 that the older codes are really quite hard to see. They almost look like they are printed with inc on the bottles? I have an LOI marked with L3 at home and the same hardly visible codes are present several of my other Ardbegs which are bottled 2003 or earlier. All bottlings after 2004 have a more distinct code printed on them.
