Talisker 30- Possible Ebay fake?

Postby Nelly » Tue Jul 01, 2008 3:56 pm

So I was browsing ebay and I happened on this listing for a 2007 bottling of Talisker 30. The issue is that Talisker's 2007 edition of the 30yo was bottled at 50.7% ABV for 2958 bottles while the 2006 edition was bottled at 51.9% ABV for 3000 bottles. But the pictures of this listing clearly have the 2007 bottling numbers but the 2006 ABV numbers. This is a fake right?

I've never understood why forgers don't just copy an original. If this is a fake, and if they have a mismatch between label and serial number does that suggest they have stolen some genuine labels?

Guys could all the data be wrong becuase its a 750cl bottle and not 700 or is it the 750s you have. Don't forget the bottle is of the last one he sold!

It might be a fake or it might not. If you have any qualms that it is a fake just let me say that you can get a real bonafided no-questions-needed Talisker 30 at Binny's for $299.99.

Cheers!

Well, I've done some more research into the item and I have a sneaking suspicion that it is an American bottling issue. The seller was pretty accommodating in sending me more info, pictures as well as giving me a guarantee, so I don't think it's a fake. I believe that the 70cl and 750ml might simply have slight variations on the label, but I guess the only way to find out is to buy it and taste it. I might also drop by shop to see if I can get a comparison.

I would suspect similar (or manufacturing error on label) as it seems really convoluted by anyone to create a fake of the whole setup like this and then miss out on such a detail. Even if I´ve seen some examples on the web of weird (and even funny) fakes this seems unlikely as a forgery.

Hmmm, comparing it to my 2007 bottle there are some differences.

1. 70Cl vs 750ml

2. Under the words limited edition mine has 'No.' before the bottle number

3. On the bottle seal mine has a little pic of Skye and the Lat 57 17.9N etc running around it in gold

4. The Bottled in 2007 line on mine is split on to two lines with 2007 being twice the size.

It must be an American bottling difference. Here is a picture from a forum member in the How many open bottles do you normally have? thread, and on Page 1 was this picture.
