ARDBEG CORRYVRECKAN. CONTENTS ?

I don't know if the contents of the Corryvreckan have been mentioned before.

I have been told that the Corryvreckan is a vatting of 12 Y.O first fill bourbon casks with very young fresh French oak casks.

If anyone else can give any more details please do.

I think this is going to remain a mystery - I asked this question twice at the Ardbeg distilery and was told two different answers. I've heard there could be sherry casks and/or Burgandy casks in the vatting

Based on the taste, I'd say there are definitely red wine casks in the mix - they bring out that cherryade flavour. I'd say there's also a fair amount of young whisky at play, too.

The rumour I had heard/read is that there was some young whisky and some burgundy casks in the mix.

I tried it at Whisky Fringe (what a scrum when they opened it) and I was rather underwhelmed, mind you it was only a small sample. It certainly has some red-wine influence as Nick says and not to my tastes.

The Ren was far better for me but I'm so glad I stocked up on Oogy when it was cheaper and contained older casks.

I'am sure the Oogling contained even younger whisky than the Corryvreckan...I believe it had some very young bourbon hogsheads and a 4 year old sherry butt.

Then there's the Committee Very Young.
One of my favourite Ardbegs ever was the first ever Committee bottle..the sherry butt # 2394 a single cask 23 y.o released in 2000 at £150....happy days !

The Corryvreckan cask details were given on the brilliant Whiskyfun.com site (6th June update) and the source quoted was the distillery manager Mickey Heads. The whisky itself was scored at 90/100 on the site.

I should also have added that our tour guide confirmed the inclusion of french wine casks when we did the tour during Feis Ile in May. I agree with Nick that you can certainly taste this influence in the dram.

I totally agree with this. The Corry is drinkable, but really nothing special. Underwhelming continues to be my impression of it. I just wish they would stop putting whisky into these casks, because we always end up with it chucked into something that might otherwise have been decent.

I was lucky to have tasted an Ardbeg from a burgundy cask with Michael Heads in his tasting in Stockholm at the whisky festival September 2007. I suggested they bottle the cask immediately it was that good! So I'm happy to hear it went into the Corryvreckan. But hope they've left some for a single cask bottling!
