Lagavulin 16 vs Lagavulin Distiller's Editions.

Postby Elagabalus » Wed Oct 08, 2008 1:12 am

Does anyone prefer Lagavulin DEs to Lagavulin 16? I do. Not that I dislike Lagavulin 16 of course it's just that I am not overly fond of it. I've probably mentioned it before though that Lagavulin DE is probably my fav SMS.

Just curious as to the opinions of my esteemed colleagues. :D

I am in full agreement. I find that with most of the other DEs (with the exception of the Caol Ila), that the sherry (or other wine cask) influence overpowers the distillery characteristics. However, I find that the Lagavulin, likely due to the heavy PPM, is able to retain its original flavor, and adds a nice initial wave of sweetness before the peat takes over.

Usually I´m not a friend of that finishing-mania, but in case of the Laga DE I like it and I dare say that this might be the best finish of all standard-bottlings, because the strong sweetness of the px-sherry is an ideal-comibination with the heavy but soft peatiness of the Lagavulin.
