Discovering whisky: A tale of three islands
Iâm one of those people who thinks in lists and, as the end of the year arrives, inevitably I spend every free second I have compiling âbest ofâ charts for just about everything.
And in this job? Well itâs a battle between September and the two trips to Kentucky, and the three island trips to Scotland in October and November.
In an amazing three week spell I was privileged to be able to visit Orkney, Jura and Skye, and in the process went to three stunning distilleries.
Iâm not sure that standing by the sea edge at breakfast time on a winterâs day having water thrown in your face is anybodyâs idea of fun, but Richard Paterson likes to keep it all real.
We were on Jura and there can be no doubt that the Isle of Jura distillery dominates the island and island life in the most dramatic fashion.
When you think about the distances the lorries have to travel to take the whisky and wastage out and to bring the raw materials in, well it must do wonders for the local ferry business.
Every accountant surveying the company bottom line should visit a place like this at least once just to get a sense of proportion â to understand that it couldnât be done any other way.
I arrived at Talisker in a blustery, chilly rainfall â and it couldnât have been more perfect. The Skye visit was special because Talisker has long been a favourite â almost the point where I camein. And the distillery didnât disappoint. Highland .....
