The omens for this year’s fair, on the last weekend in April, look excellent. All 45 available trade stands have been snapped up and there is quite a waiting list. New exhibitors include Glenmorangie/Ardbeg and the German importers of Adelphi, Berry Bros and Rudd, Compass Box and CL World Brands, whose labels include Black Bottle, Tobermory and Bunnahabhain – the Islay distillery’s manager, John McLellan, is giving one of the main presentations, adding to an impressive speaker list.
The Whisky Fair organisers have pulled off another coup – the first publicly available bottling of Inchmoan. A single malt from Loch Lomond normally destined for the blending troughs only, Inchmoan is described as ‘a well-peated Inchmurrin’ – both being named after islands in Loch Lomond.
The two casks (646 and 647) being shipped to Germany are 10 year olds, to be bottled at cask strength around 55%. Independent tasting notes describe cask 647 as clean, mellow, woody on the nose and dominated by smoky, phenolic, peaty notes. The taste is well-balanced, sweet and mellow with notes of vanilla essence leading to a lingering, sweet, woody and peaty finish.
Cask 646 rates as slightly oilier on the nose, with a more complex, fruity, estery taste and an intense perfect peaty finish. Bottles at keen prices will be on the organisers’ stand at L.....
