New Master for The Worshipful Company of Distillers
At a ceremony rich in tradition as befits a Livery company that was granted its Royal Charter in 1638 by Charles 1, Brian Morrison was installed as the Master of The Worshipful Company of Distillers for 2013 on 22nd November.
He is the third generation of his family to be involved in the Scotch Whisky Industry, having spent forty years with the family business, Morrison Bowmore Distillers, from which he retired in 2004. He is also a former Council Member and Treasurer of the Scotch Whisky Association, a Master of the Keepers of the Quaich and Chairman of the Scottish Liqueur Centre.
The 1638 Royal Charter gave the Company the power to exercise a monopoly and regulate the distilling trade within 21 miles of the Cities of London and Westminster.
Over the centuries the Company’s role has changed, and today it positions itself at the hub of the spirits industry through its involvement in education and the provision of scholarships, the creation of a dedicated spirits course in association with the Wine and Spirits Education Trust , and furthering the interests of the global spirits industry by sponsoring such annual events as the City Debate and the IWSC Spirits Tasting. These are in addition to its charitable donations.
