Coming on strong
Islay distillery Bruichladdich has once more run in to controversy – by recreating a quadruple distilled whisky with a very high alcoholic strength.
The X4 Perilous Whisky was condemned by the Scotch Whisky Association and criticised for focusing on strength.
But the distillery defends the whisky because it says it is recreating a historical product and argues that it is breaking new and exciting ground in terms of flavour.
Fifty four American Oak casks have been filled for maturation. It will lose strength to the angels as it matures.
When it is deemed to be ready to drink by Master Distiller Jim McEwan, it will be Islay bottled at the strength deemed appropriate at that time.
Some will be further matured for the maximum term: starting with such high alcohol, this unique whisky will still be maturing well in to its 70th year.Chat about this story in the Forums.
