Event goes up in smoke

This year’s World Whisky & Cigar Challenge, held at Boisdale restaurant in London, has been heralded the most successful yet.

Twenty seven of the best cigar connoisseurs and whisky aficionados in the United Kingdom took part.

They included representatives from Hunters & Frankau, Davidoff, Pappy Van Winkle, Whyte and Mackay, Inver House Distillers and other cigar and whisky merchants.

Four combinations of cigars and whisky, including a bourbon, had made it through the initial tasting round, but the voting showed one clear winner, the Honduran Don Ramos cigar and Whyte & Mackay 30 year old.

While not every single judge’s favourite most agreed that the whisky brought the best out of the cigar and vice versa. The sweet, slightly sherried well-balanced whisky just hit home with the earthy, mellow smoke.

Results:
Gold – Don Ramos and Whyte & Mackay 30 year old
Silver – Davidoff Millennium blend and Dalmore Black Pearl
Bronze – Avo Domaine and Dalmore Black Pearl
Highly Commended – Don Ramos and Pappy Van Winkle 20 year old
