13 Years Old Whisky

Browse our whisky database by the age of the whisky. The 'age' of a whisky is the time it spent in the 'cask' before being bottled. The longer a whisky remains in the cask, the more flavour it will acquire and the less spirit will remain.

The age of a whisk(e)y is determined by the length of time it has spent in the cask before being bottled. Once the whisk(e)y has been bottled the aging process stops. A whisk(e)y bottled at 10 years old will always be a 10 year old whisk(e)y even in a hundred years. By then the vintage of the whisk(e)y would still make it a rare and valuable item.

When dealing especially with blends, but also with single malts, some of the whiskies may be older than the stated age. However none of the whiskies will be younger.

Bourbon - U.S.A. - 65.90% 7 Despite this being older, it is less astringently woody than the similar five-year-old.

Cadenhead's Bladnoch 1989, 13 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.90% 7 Tired and irritable when first poured, but gradually opens up, more so when water was added.

Cadenhead's Dalmore 13 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 59.90% 8 Extraordinarily sweet-but an engaging curiosity. This pale, golden Dalmore, without the sherry, has an especially characteristic touch of amontillado.

Cadenhead's Glendronach 13 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 55.40% 7 Drier and less rich than the distillery bottlings.

Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 8 Incredibly appetising. Perhaps a touch more acidity somewhere would balance the sweetness.

Dewar Rattray Auchentoshan 1990, 13 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 60.00% 7 I would never have identified this as an Auchentoshan. Proves 'the Glasgow malt' has plenty of character, but this expression lacks subtlety.

Single Malt - Republic of Ireland - 56.00% 7 Refreshing and well balanced. The nose promises more than it delivers on the palate. I have never come across such a phenolic HP.
