23 Years Old Whisky

Browse our whisky database by the age of the whisky. The 'age' of a whisky is the time it spent in the 'cask' before being bottled. The longer a whisky remains in the cask, the more flavour it will acquire and the less spirit will remain.

The age of a whisk(e)y is determined by the length of time it has spent in the cask before being bottled. Once the whisk(e)y has been bottled the aging process stops. A whisk(e)y bottled at 10 years old will always be a 10 year old whisk(e)y even in a hundred years. By then the vintage of the whisk(e)y would still make it a rare and valuable item.

When dealing especially with blends, but also with single malts, some of the whiskies may be older than the stated age. However none of the whiskies will be younger.

Single Malt - Scotland - 58.80% 7 You have got to like woody whiskies to drink this one. Has gone over the top for me. Certainly an old whisky but too long a maturation made it grumpy. Water kills it.

Single Malt - Scotland - 59.00% 7 Awake up dram. Fresh,vibrant,wide open on the sea horizon. Bring bacon and eggs.

Caol Ila 23 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 60.00% 8 All the oily, waxy, junipery, bush-like flavours of Caol Ila, but the whiff of the sea comes late.

Chieftain's Choice Banff 1979, Aged 23 Years
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 7 I thought this whisky had died in the bottle, but water brought it back to life.

Chieftain's Choice Brora 1981, 23 Years Old, Sherry Finish
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 7 Rich flavours. A chestnut-coloured whisky for people who like very grown-up sweetmeats: Marron glacé, for example. Unlikely to be enjoyed by anyone younger than the whisky.

Douglas Laing St Magadalene 23 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00% 7 Interesting but a sweet note too far maybe but the finish gets a grip on itself and leaves a clean minty freshness. Recommended for sweet tooth.

Duncan Taylor Knockando 1980, 23 Years Old, Cask 1913
Single Malt - Scotland - 47.00% 7 Knockando is always a well-mannered whisky, although this expression seems a tad tired.

Evan Williams 23 Years Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Bourbon - U.S.A. - 53.50% 8 A lovely bourbon, but I prefer it younger.

Glencadam 1983 25 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 8 Elegant and complex. Highly recommended.

Hart Brothers Caol Ila 23 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00% 7 For its age, not at all woody, but lacking in roundness. The flavours seem to be coming apart.

Knockdhu 23 Years Old Limited Edition
Single Malt - Scotland - 57.40% 8 A classic friendly Speyside, well balanced and enjoying its maturity.

McGibbon's Port Ellen 23 Years Old, Provenance
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 7 Reminded me of old Calvados. Oak tends to overwhelm fruit but a wee dash of water tones it down. Very unpeated for a Port Ellen!

Single Malt - Scotland - 53.60% 8 Rather aggressive for a malt that is usually delicate and sweet, but still very distinctive. Will stand softening with a good splash of water.
