Browse our whisky database by the age of the whisky. The 'age' of a whisky is the time it spent in the 'cask' before being bottled. The longer a whisky remains in the cask, the more flavour it will acquire and the less spirit will remain.
The age of a whisk(e)y is determined by the length of time it has spent in the cask before being bottled. Once the whisk(e)y has been bottled the aging process stops. A whisk(e)y bottled at 10 years old will always be a 10 year old whisk(e)y even in a hundred years. By then the vintage of the whisk(e)y would still make it a rare and valuable item.
When dealing especially with blends, but also with single malts, some of the whiskies may be older than the stated age. However none of the whiskies will be younger.
Kentucky, Louisville, Benromach
Adelphi Clynelish 27 Years Old, Cask 2568
Single Malt - Scotland - 56.30%
8 A robust, straight-ahead Clynelish, which is a great thing.
Adelphi Glen Grant 1970, 27 Years Old, Cask 7638
Single Malt - Scotland - 56.90%
7 Enough character and complexity to withstand the heavy oakiness, but beginning to show its age.
Adelphi Royal Brackla 27 Years Old, Cask 5467
Single Malt - Scotland - 59.50%
7 The best Brackla I have tasted. Night-cap?
Berry's Own Selection Glenlivet 27 Years Old 1982
Single Malt - Scotland - 52.20%
7 The nose is enticing but the palate is overwhelmed by the wood. And water exacerbates the astringency.
Cadenhead's Benromach 1976, 27 Years Old Authentic Collection
Single Malt - Scotland - 57.10%
8 The nose promised more smoothness. Quite an austere character on the palate but with a lot of class.
Cooper's Choice Glen Grant 1977 27 Years Old, Sherry Cask
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 A Speysider with a rich chestnut colour, plenty of aroma and lots of flavour. Makes a change from the dumbed-down and the terminally delicate.
Cooper's Choice Longmorn 1975, 27 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 Complex, as Longmorn always is, but I wonder about the cask.
Cooper's Choice Strathisla 1976, 27 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 Always a complex whisky, hard to pin down. This sample seems to have triggered an oriental mood.
Dewar Rattray Bunnahabhain 27 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 49.90%
8 Not as elegant and complex as some in this flight, but the breakfast it evoked was hearty and delicious.
Dewar Rattray Glen Mhor 27 Years Old 1982
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.20%
7 An assertive character. A complex nose, a less enticing palate though. But water cuts the edge and makes it conversational. Needs time to “relax”.
Duncan Taylor North British 27 Years Old
Single Grain - Scotland - 52.80%
7 The palate does not have the refreshing appeal of the nose. Water tames it but not enough to make it really palatable.
Inverleven 1979 27 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.10%
7 This whisky definitely needs water to extinguish the fire. Would have benefited from a bottling at a lower strength.
Kingsbury Islay 1973, 27 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 47.40%
8 Has this cask slept so long that it cannot completely wake up?
Ladyburn 1973, 27 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.40%
6 I am pleased that this very rare malt has been made available. Ladyburn is a product about which I am frequently asked. Sad to say, its greatest appeal is as a collector's item.
Laphroaig 27 Years Old Vintage 1980
Single Malt - Scotland - 51.00%
7 An acquired taste. Some will like it, but it's too woody and nothing on the 1974 bottling by la Maison du Whisky.
Old & Rare Platinum The Macallan 1977 27 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 51.00%
8 This is a very decent example of an independent bottling.
Parker's Heritage Collection 27 Years Old 96 Proof
Bourbon - U.S.A. - 48.00%
8 Heaven Hill has quietly been releasing some stunners in recent years. This
is another.
Rare Malts Blair Athol 27 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.70%
7 The flavours seem to be held back, then suddenly released. This whisky might have been less inhibited at a younger age.
Rare Malts Cardhu 1973 27 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 60.00%
7 They made bigger, peatier whiskies in those days.
Rare Malts Teaninich 1972 27 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 64.20%
8 This little-known malt almost always surprises me with its robust flavours.
Tamdhu 1984 27 Years Old Scott's Selection
Single Malt - Scotland - 49.60%
8 A nicely-integrated old dram.
The Whisky Exchange Bunnahabhain 27 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 A welcome addition.
Tomintoul 27 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 40.00%
7 Normally thought of as a light malt but this is a rich, viscous expression.
