Browse our whisky database by the age of the whisky. The 'age' of a whisky is the time it spent in the 'cask' before being bottled. The longer a whisky remains in the cask, the more flavour it will acquire and the less spirit will remain.
The age of a whisk(e)y is determined by the length of time it has spent in the cask before being bottled. Once the whisk(e)y has been bottled the aging process stops. A whisk(e)y bottled at 10 years old will always be a 10 year old whisk(e)y even in a hundred years. By then the vintage of the whisk(e)y would still make it a rare and valuable item.
When dealing especially with blends, but also with single malts, some of the whiskies may be older than the stated age. However none of the whiskies will be younger.
Kentucky, Louisville, Benromach
Auchentoshan 1973, 29 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 55.80%
8 The chestnut colour betrays the time this whisky has spent in oak. I have tasted much woodier whiskies - but not oakier Auchentoshans.
Bowmore 29 Years Old, 1981
Single Malt - Scotland - 49.60%
7 That perfume problem that bedevils old MBD malts knocks this back.
Bowmore 29 Years Old, 1982
Single Malt - Scotland - 47.30%
7 One of those Bowmores.
Cadenhead's Loch Lomond 1974, 29 Years Old, Chairmans Stock
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.40%
7 The brilliant greeny-gold colour sets a summery mood. Remarkably fresh. Drier than other Inchmurrins I have tasted. Green salad rather than the more usual tropical fruit salad.
Cask Collection Glenlivet 1977 29 Years old
Single Malt - Scotland - 47.20%
8 A well-balanced dram. The age speaks but it has kept a vigorous freshness.
Cragganmore 29 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 52.50%
8 At this age, more complex and elegant than ever. No obvious sherry.
Dalwhinnie 29 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 57.80%
7 Seems to have become more lively with age.
Dewar Rattray Dufftown 1975, 29 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 With some Dufftowns you are glad when you've had enough. This is a well-made example which has been matched by very good bourbon wood.
Dewar Rattray Glenglassaugh 1976 29 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 53.00%
7 Of interest, but not great.
Glen Garioch 1968, 29 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 56.30%
8 With its chestnut colour and highly distinctive flavours, this is a wonderfully wintery whisky.
Glenfarclas The Family Casks 1983 29 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 51.00%
7 This whisky is a ‘whispering' one. Delicate, elegant but maybe a bit shy.
Glenturret 29 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 55.60%
8 An underrated distillery which, when on form, is up there with the best. More please!
Hart Brothers Glen Grant 1972, 29 Years Old Sherrywood
Single Malt - Scotland - 53.60%
7 Glen Grant was one of the first malts to be bottled as a single malt, in the days when light-tasting spirits were often filled into heavy sherry casks. I have always felt that this overwhelms the spir...
Inchgower 1982
Single Malt - Scotland - 53.90%
7 I'm an Inchgower fan but I'd want more from a whisky of this age.
Old & Rare Highland Park 29 Years Old 1978
Single Malt - Scotland - 56.70%
8 Old, slightly grumbly but fascinating. Highly recommended.
Port Ellen 29 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 55.30%
8 That dram gives you a briny hug. It warms you without burning. A zesty queen of the Hebrides.
Scott's Selection Aultmore 1982 29 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 58.40%
8 Well-made and well-matured.
Signatory Silent Stills Glencadam 29 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 52.50%
7 This whisky used to remind me of strawberry shortcake. This bottling turns me toward tiramisu.
