Browse our whisky database by the age of the whisky. The 'age' of a whisky is the time it spent in the 'cask' before being bottled. The longer a whisky remains in the cask, the more flavour it will acquire and the less spirit will remain.
The age of a whisk(e)y is determined by the length of time it has spent in the cask before being bottled. Once the whisk(e)y has been bottled the aging process stops. A whisk(e)y bottled at 10 years old will always be a 10 year old whisk(e)y even in a hundred years. By then the vintage of the whisk(e)y would still make it a rare and valuable item.
When dealing especially with blends, but also with single malts, some of the whiskies may be older than the stated age. However none of the whiskies will be younger.

Adelphi Glen Grant 1970, 31 Years Old, Cask 1036
Single Malt - Scotland - 55.40%
7 The better balanced of these two Glen Grants. The more integrated flavours. Seems to have matured better.
Adelphi Teaninich 31 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 57.80%
8 Well-matured, amazing for its age.
Auchentoshan 1966, 31 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 45.80%
8 A fine whisky, but does something as fresh and soft benefit from quite so much ageing?
Banff 1966, 31 Years Old, Old Malt Cask
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00%
7 Banff was never a classic, but it is an evocatively old-fashioned Highland malt, and it has stood up reasonably well to great age.
Cadenhead's Millburn 31 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 52.30%
8 Not a great aromatic display. A cardboardy touch on the palate. Water soothes alcohol a little while underlining the unidimensional aniseed/minty profile.
Dewar Rattray Strathmill 1975 31 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 49.30%
7 The wood has taken charge. Doesn't appear to have the character to carry extended aging.
Dewar Rattray Strathmill 1976
Single Malt - Scotland - 48.40%
7 All was going so well then the finish undoes all the good work. Ultimately unbalanced. Still at least my breath smells minty fresh.
Duncan Taylor Glen Grant 31 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 42.40%
7 A reticent nose is completely eclipsed by a huge but uncomplicated palate. Benefits greatly from water.
Longmorn 1976 31 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.30%
8 A natural beauty. Rich and elegant, without ostentation. As harmonious as a concerto from Mozart.
Longmorn 31 Years Old Bottle for the Whisky Fair
Single Malt - Scotland - 49.80%
8 An extremely complex – and for me, pleasant – nose is matched by a dense and demanding palate.
Old Malt Cask Tomatin
- Scotland - 50.00%
7 Lovely. Has retained freshness (or taken a long time to get here.
Port Ellen 1978 31 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.60%
7 Another evolution in the Port Ellen saga. Less austere but also less overtly
smoky. Fascinating.
Scott's Selection Glenlivet 31 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 45.50%
7 A decent Glenlivet.
Signatory Cambus 1964, 31 Years Old
Single Grain - Scotland - 43.80%
7 A good example of a single grain as a pleasant dram, though that is true of several in this tasting. If someone gave me this whisky in a bar, I would enjoy it, but I have yet to find a single grain th...
The Whisky Exchange Glen Grant 31 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 56.90%
7 With water, more toffeish malt notes emerge in the middle, but the wood is very dominating.
