Nose
Clearly old. Reduced into thick toffee, heathery smoke then stewing quince, rum-soaked sultana and mixed peels. Then it starts to lighten, becoming sumptuously elegant.
Palate
Gentle, sweet start with good layered complexity. Barley sugar, oak, peat, tinned apricot this time.
Finish
The fruit rises gently once more. Long and lightly smoky.
Comment
Superb balance. Classic distillery character retained after four decades - no mean achievement.

Nose
Intense, complex, elegant. Damp warehouse; Lots of “antique” fragrances, mixing indoors and outdoors. Pot-pourri, old oak floor. On time, briny scents emerge. Smoked fish, boat tar but also passion fruit and crab apple.
Palate
Rich, all flavours so well melted. Exotic fruit. A seaweedy note..
Finish
Dry, gently spicy, with a hint of tar and marzipan.
Comment
A superb dram but given the price...
