Chieftain's Choice

Chieftain's Choice Imperial Speyside 24 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 One for the palate and not the nose.

Chieftain's Choice Auchroisk 11 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
7 The port threatens to dominate the malt. I can't recall tasting such a powerful wood finish. Could seduce people who believe they don't like whisky. For that purpose, I would use this rather than a li...

Chieftain's Choice Auchroisk Medoc
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
7 A port finish? Rather brutal and overwhelming. Was the distillery character so bland?

Chieftain's Choice Banff 1978, Sherry Wood
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 Too burnt and dry. Not for everyone. Reminds me of a particular espresso and grappa, standing outside the Arsenale, on a winter's morning.

Chieftain's Choice Banff 1979, Aged 23 Years
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 I thought this whisky had died in the bottle, but water brought it back to life.

Chieftain's Choice Benrinnes 10 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
7 For me this has been bottled too early and before the sulphuriness of youth has been fully matured out.

Chieftain's Choice Bladnoch 18 Years Old Sherry Wood
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 A distinguished expression of sweet Oloroso, even if it seems a bit ostentatious on the palate. For afterdinner enjoyment.

Chieftain's Choice Brora 1981, 23 Years Old, Sherry Finish
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 Rich flavours. A chestnut-coloured whisky for people who like very grown-up sweetmeats: Marron glacé, for example. Unlikely to be enjoyed by anyone younger than the whisky.

Chieftain's Choice Brora 1982, 19 Years Old, Sherry Butt
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 Pure mastered (and mastering) Oloroso style. But where is the spirit contribution?

Chieftain's Choice Brora 24 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 Elegant and highly individual. Takes no prisoners.

Chieftain's Choice Caol Ila 13 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 Here we go again...Caol Ila hits the nail on the head yet again.

Chieftain's Choice Caol Ila 1990
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
8 The more Caol Ila makes itself available the more I seem to enjoy it.

Chieftain's Choice Clynelish 13 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 So different to the Douglas Laing Clynelish. The perfect whisky with farm cheeses.

Chieftain's Choice Dallas Dhu 26 Years Old Rum Finish
Single Malt - Scotland - 48.50%
7 I wonder what type of rum casks were used. I cannot find any hint to a finish here. Don't look for delicacy but fine if you look for a wake up call.

Chieftain's Choice Glencadam 1985, 16 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
8 Graceful and characterful. To be sipped on a midsummer starlit night. A true dancing dram.

Chieftain's Choice Glenturret 1990, 12 Years Old, Port Finish
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
7 Refreshing, appetising.

Chieftain's Choice Glenturret, 10 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
7 Pleasant, but I have had more complex bottlings from this distillery.

Whisky Magazine - Editors Choice - Winner

Chieftain's Choice Glen Scotia 1974 30 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 42.20%
8 What a lovely nectar. Great fruit and cream combination.

Chieftain's Choice Laphroaig 12 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 A good, clean Laphroaig. Not exceptional, but true to character.

Chieftain's Choice Littlemill 1984, 18 Years Old Rum finish
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 I have always rated Littlemill more highly than most tasters do, but stocks are getting past their best.

Whisky Magazine - Editors Choice - Winner

Chieftain's Choice Port Ellen 24 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 59.40%
8 Complex stuff going on here. A really rewarding Port Ellen.

Chieftain's Choice Rosebank 1991 Sherry Finish, 11 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
7 An attractive medium-bodied Rosebank. The sherry finish has added complexity to delicacy. Some exotic notes which makes it really appetising.

Chieftain's Choice Scapa 1985, 16 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
7 Rich and generous. Again, overwhelming distillery character.

Chieftain's Choice Springbank 35 Years Old Single Cask Sherry Butt
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.20%
7 Springbank is a big whisky but the sherry here is even bigger, and wipes out some of the whisky's subtleties.

Chieftain's Choice Teaninich 21 Years Old Sherry Butt
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 Not much subtlety, but I always enjoy its big, confident, flavours.

Chieftain's Choice The Glenrothes 1992, 10 Years Old, Port Finish
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
7 More mature than its 10 years would suggest. Fruitier than the conventional distillery bottlings. Refreshing. Like sorbet between courses.
