The best whiskies in the world 2017, Icons of Whisky Global winners and the conclusion to this year's Battle of the Blends
Dewar Rattray Auchentoshan 15 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 59.00% 7 A well-balanced dram, as malty as fruity with a luscious toffee tempting character.
Dewar Rattray Auchentoshan 1990, 13 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 60.00% 7 I would never have identified this as an Auchentoshan. Proves 'the Glasgow malt' has plenty of character, but this expression lacks subtlety.
Dewar Rattray Aultmore 16 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 57.90% 8 It's not my preferred style of whisky, but this has real class and excellent balance.
Dewar Rattray Balblair 1990
Single Malt - Scotland - 62.90% 7 The strength is a bit aggressive. And oak is not well-integrated. Tastes like a too young fellow.
Dewar Rattray Balblair 1990
Single Malt - Scotland - 61.80% 8 A rich multi layered whisky which, surprisingly, I enjoyed better without water. The latter enhances a bitter tone.
Dewar Rattray Balblair 1990 15 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 62.90% 7 The nose is more attractive than the palate, rather restrained.
Dewar Rattray Balmenach 26 Years Old 1983
Single Malt - Scotland - 48.20% 4 A complex and vibrant whisky. Like walking in an orchard on a crisp morning. A dram to clear your mind on a dull morning.
Dewar Rattray Benriach 15 Years Old, Cask Collection
Single Malt - Scotland - 59.90% 7 Quite an energetic guy which needs water to be tamed. A classic light Speysider, lacking elegance though.
Dewar Rattray Benrinnes 14 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 59.30% 7 Nose and palate are a bit agressive with a lingering sourness which is disturbing. A prickly character. Water smooths the flavours over but this is not enough.
Dewar Rattray Ben Nevis 1992 14 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 57.20% 7 I find it a little grubby.
Dewar Rattray Bowmore 14 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 57.80% 8 A beautiful Islay malt in a sherry refill dressing. Rich aromatic development, great combination of strength and sweetness.
Dewar Rattray Bowmore 15 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 52.90% 7 Some of the classic Islay elements are there, but discordant. Not well rounded.
Dewar Rattray Bowmore 17 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 49.60% 7 The nose is more interesting than the palate. A full bodied character which has flirted a bit too long with wood. Might suit cigar palates.
Dewar Rattray Bowmore 1990, 15 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 55.70% 8 Straightforward and uncompromising. Very good balance. The classic Islay outdoor dram for simple enjoyment.
Dewar Rattray Bowmore 1990, 16 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.00% 8 Has richness and some finesse.
Dewar Rattray Bowmore 1991, 14 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 59.60% 7 Old Bowmore is fascinating: it either becomes light and tropical with no smoke or reduces into this anchovy like concentration.
Dewar Rattray Bruichladdich 1991, 12 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 60.00% 8 Savoury. Summery. A picnic malt. Or eating freshly shucked oysters with Jim McEwan.
Dewar Rattray Bruichladdich 1993 12 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 55.10% 7 Complex, subtle and interesting, but not a dram to stay at home for. Go out, have fun!
Dewar Rattray Bunnahabhain 27 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 49.90% 8 Not as elegant and complex as some in this flight, but the breakfast it evoked was hearty and delicious.
Dewar Rattray Bunnahabhain 35 Years Old 1974
Single Malt - Scotland - 44.30% 7 The nose has got some complexity but the palate is overwhelmed and overdried by spices. It needs water.
Dewar Rattray 1982 25 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 62.50% 7 Perfect balance. An extremely good Caol Ila. Recommended.
Dewar Rattray Caol Ila 15 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 56.00% 8 An enticing young beauty. Matches subtlety with character.
Dewar Rattray Caol Ila 1991, 15 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 56.70% 8 Fishy yet sweet. Kipper crumble in a hospital anyone?
Dewar Rattray Caperdonich 1980 25 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 53.10% 7 A shy little furry woodland creature peeking out, then hiding again.
Dewar Rattray Craigellachie 15 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.90% 8 A model of balance and elegance. A first class Speysider.
Dewar Rattray Craigellachie 15 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 59.90% 7 On top of a maturation in poor wood, seems to have undergone problems at distillation. Disappointing.
Dewar Rattray Craigellachie 1989 16 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.70% 7 The different elements haven't been pulled together. A better cask would have given some order and control.
Dewar Rattray Dufftown 1975, 29 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 8 With some Dufftowns you are glad when you've had enough. This is a well-made example which has been matched by very good bourbon wood.
Dewar Rattray Glencadam 1975 30 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.40% 8 A dazzling quality you only get when cask and spirit have been in a long slow dance.
Dewar Rattray Glenglassaugh 1976 29 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 53.00% 7 Of interest, but not great.
Dewar Rattray Glenglassaugh 21 Years Old 1986
Single Malt - Scotland - 53.40% 6 “Sweet and sulphury”now, there's a catchy brand name.
Dewar Rattray Glen Garioch
Single Malt - Scotland - 52.50% 7 A quirky little number. Well worth a look.
Dewar Rattray Glen Grant 1985 19 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 58.40% 8 A definite sharpness which hides a sweeter character. Water does not help much, enhancing the pepperiness. For those who like it hot.
Dewar Rattray Glen Mhor 27 Years Old 1982
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.20% 7 An assertive character. A complex nose, a less enticing palate though. But water cuts the edge and makes it conversational. Needs time to “relax”.
Dewar Rattray Glen Scotia 17 Years Old 1992
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.90% 7 I had a suspicion at first nose. Then it seemed to open on rich aromas. But the palate unfortunately confirmed my apprehension. Can't see the point in drinking wood!
Dewar Rattray Glen Spey 11 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 59.00% 7 It's a cad pursuing an innocent girl. The big bad wolf after little Red Riding Hood.
Dewar Rattray Highland Park 18 Years Old 1989
Single Malt - Scotland - 53.50% 7 Couldn't be more different from the other Highland Park. That's casks for you!
Dewar Rattray Highland Park 24 Years Old Single Cask
Single Malt - Scotland - 52.30% 8 Decent enough, and the palate is lovely, but somehow you expect more after 24 years in the cask.
Dewar Rattray Invergordon 1964
Single Grain - Scotland - 51.30% 7 A pretty bundle of US oak, slathered in silky creaminess. Impossible not to like.
Dewar Rattray Invergordon 1964
Single Grain - Scotland - 52.10% 8 Shy at first but cheering up on cake aromas. A liquid pudding.
Dewar Rattray Invergordon 40 Years Old
Single Grain - Scotland - 48.10% 8 A strange, huge, dark and dense whisky. Try with Pecan pie or scallops seared in burnt butter. Surely a nod to the Ozarks?
Dewar Rattray Longmorn 1984 20 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.00% 7 Very pretty and summery. A good antidote if you feel you might be turning into a phenol-guzzling loony.
Dewar Rattray Longmorn 1990 14 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 55.30% 7 I loved the aroma. After that the stern, impenetrable palate was frustrating but in keeping with the mood. A good, old-fashioned Speysider.
Dewar Rattray Mortlach 15 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 55.44% 7 The lack of interaction between oak and spirit makes this hard to get excited about.
Dewar Rattray Cask Collection Strathmill 15 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 63.50% 7 Whatever its age, this whisky is full of youthful vigour.
Dewar Rattray Strathmill 1975 31 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 49.30% 7 The wood has taken charge. Doesn't appear to have the character to carry extended aging.
Dewar Rattray Strathmill 1976
Single Malt - Scotland - 48.40% 7 All was going so well then the finish undoes all the good work. Ultimately unbalanced. Still at least my breath smells minty fresh.
Dewar Rattray Tamdhu 12 Years Old 1980
Single Malt - Scotland - 57.10% 7 An enticing note and a more “square” palate. It needs water to cut the edges. Quite refreshing and invigorating for a “floral dew”.
Dewar Rattray Teaninich 30 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 60.80% 7 The high strength makes it difficult to tame even with water. Some like it hot. But my palate waves a white flag.
Dewar Rattray The Macallan 14 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 57.60% 7 A very odd Macallan. Perhaps a very odd cask.
Dewar Rattray The Macallan 16 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 51.30% 7 Puts me in mind of an aged Tequila, with a big splash of lime.
Dewar Rattray The Macallan 17 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 58.40% 8 A beautifully combined aromatic display with a caressing texture. Delicious.
Dewar Rattray Tobermory 11 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 59.90% 5 This just hasn't been allowed to mature out. The result being it's harsh and all over the shop.
Dewar Rattray Tomintoul 1975 30 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 48.50% 7 Slightly angular. Not a lot seems to have happened.
