Nose
Full and thick with decent intensity. American oak: hot sawdust, cherry, spices. Sugared almond. Palate
Sweet with banana and coconut to the fore. Ripe with just sufficient grip. A drop of water brings out the grass, giving it a fragrant edge. Finish
Medium. Comment
Proof (if it were needed) that Cooley is a serious player.
Gavin Smith
Nose
Quite bourbon-like. Vanilla, maple syrup, and even a suggestion of menthol. Ice cream and fudge sauce. Palate
Initially, drier and more oaky than the nose promises, but with developing stewed fruits. Finish
Short and slightly bitter. Disappointing. Comment
The luxurious nose raises expectations that the palate can’t quite match.
