- Nose
- Character is still there, but the smoke seems more pure and has become
more about wood .
- Palate
- There's no great loss of identity but the fruit cake element makes it all more
muted and the smoke struggles .
- Finish
- Gentle sweet and a little marine.
- Comment
- The problem with finishing smoky whiskies is that since you can't make them more smoky you are forced to reduce their defining character. By making them 'fruitier' or ‘sweeter' you then change the balance and diminish the overall effect.
- Nose
- A little more straightforward. The layers are compressed, its more
doused woodfires. A little hot tarmac.
- Palate
- The smoke has almost been hidden under dark rich fruit notes. There is more sweetness and a roasted edge as well to it.
- Finish
- Lingering with a sweet peaty note.
- Comment
- The original smokiness has been smoothed over by the rich juicy fruit. Not bad, just a different approach. One again for those dark winter nights.
