Irish Whiskey - Single Malt

Connemara Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey
Single Malt - Ireland - 40.00%
7 Characterful, vivid but not complex. “Tastes” stronger than 40%. A body warmer for cool evenings.

Connemara Sherry Finish
Single Malt - Republic of Ireland - 46.00%
7 Needs time to cheer up. A rigid oaky profile. Surprisingly, water softens it.

Connemara Single Malt Irish whiskey
Single Malt - Ireland - 40.00%
8 The revival of rustic peatiness adds a whole new element to today's palette of Irish whiskey flavours.

Connemara Turf Mor 3 Years Old
Single Malt - Republic of Ireland - 58.20%
6 Way, way too young.

Craoi na Mona
Single Malt - Ireland - 40.00%
6 Ominously pale and initial suspicions were proved correct. This has been bottled way too young.

Knappogue Castle 1993
Single Malt - Ireland - 40.00%
7 The vinho verde colour suggests a very light whiskey, and this certainly is, in both body and flavour. This bottling seems markedly thinner than the last vintage I tasted.

Knappogue Castle Twin Wood 16 Years Old
Single Malt - Republic of Ireland - 40.00%
7 Nose and palate are completely different. The second saving the first. The palate shows a beautiful Irish character whereas the nose is bland. So drink it without nosing it.

Locke's 8 Years Old
Single Malt - Ireland - 40.00%
7 A very enjoyable, no nonsense malt.

Locke's Single Malt
Single Malt - Ireland - 40.00%
7 Beautifully balanced with toasted dryness.

Magilligan 1991 Limited Edition, Sherry Wood Finish
Single Malt - Ireland - 46.00%
7 Finishing Cooley's peated malt in a sherry wood for a year works a lot better than I imagined, and makes me wonder what an unpeated malt would taste like after a year in Jerez.

Magilligan 1991 Sherry Wood Finish
Single Malt - Ireland - 46.00%
7 I liked the lively 8 Years Old version. Would I be tempted away by something smoother, more mature? I would think about it...maybe.

Magilligan 8 Years Old, Irish Peated Malt
Single Malt - Ireland - 43.00%
7 A lovely, clean, malty, easily drinkable, whisky. The label promises peat, but that is hard to find.

Magilligan Pure Pot Still
Single Malt - Ireland - 43.00%
7 Although it says 'pure pot still' on the label, this is a single malt, there's no unmalted barley here. At 5 or so years old this malt is still a bit green.

Michael Collins 10 Years Old
Single Malt - Republic of Ireland - 40.00%
7 Should we try pairing that whisky with cheese? I am not convinced...

Michael Collins Single Malt
Single Malt - Ireland - 40.00%
7 A little lacking in impact after such a big nose. Worth a look though.

Midleton Single Cask 1996
Single Malt - Republic of Ireland - 46.00%
7 Delicate and charming.

Teeling Small Batch 4 Years Old
Single Malt - Republic of Ireland - 46.00%
7 ?Not an unpleasant whisky but there is not much to explore. Water brings out more sweetness. Might shine through in cocktails really well.

The Irishman Aged Single Malt
Single Malt - Ireland - 40.00%
7 Once again the nose offers up hope only for it to be dashed on the palate. It's not so much these are light, it is that they lack substance.

Tyrconnell
Single Malt - Ireland - 40.00%
6 A pleasant, light-tasting malt.

Tyrconnell
Single Malt - Ireland - 40.00%
7 Pleasant, light. For sociable drinking.

Tyrconnell
Single Malt - Ireland - 40.00%
7 This malt used to be a tad young, the current bottling is older and certainly works better.

Tyrconnell 14 Years Old
Single Malt - Ireland - 46.00%
7 A decent drink, but the port finish is the winner out of the trio.

Whisky Magazine - Recommended - Winner

Tyrconnell Madeira Finish 10 Years Old
Single Malt - Ireland - 46.00%
8 Well put together, the finish not too obtrusive.

Tyrconnell Port Finish
Single Malt - Ireland - 46.00%
7 This just balances the whiskey and the finish.
