Scotch Whisky - Single Malt

McGibbon's Port Ellen 23 Years Old, Provenance
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 Reminded me of old Calvados. Oak tends to overwhelm fruit but a wee dash of water tones it down. Very unpeated for a Port Ellen!

Montgomerie's The Macallan 1989 Single Cask
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 Macallan in disguise. Impossible to recognise blind. So unusual but really attractive.

Mortlach 16 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
8 A great malt that is enigmatic and sometimes seems reclusive.

Mortlach 1980, 17 Years Old, Cask Strength
Single Malt - Scotland - 63.10%
7 A big, rich interpretation; an outstanding digestif.

Mortlach 1998 14 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 57.50%
7 A pleasant light aromatic profile but this whisky has not matured in very active casks.

Whisky Magazine - Recommended - Winner

Murray McDavid 1987,
Single Malt - Scotland - 40.00%
8 Both the name and the medicinal character suggests the distillery of origin.

Murray McDavid Bunnahabhain 1979 Bourbon Barrel
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
6 Surprising peatiness, but without smokiness.

Murray McDavid Bunnahabhain 1979 Sherry Cask
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
7 For an allegedly light malt, the flavours sing through but, as the dark colour suggests, there really is too much wood.

Murray McDavid Caol Ila 1989
Single Malt - Scotland - 62.70%
8 On the light side, but with some delicacy and complexity.

Whisky Magazine - Recommended - Winner

Murray McDavid Highland Park 1979
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 Very good indeed as a lightish, delicate, interpretation of Highland Park.

Murray McDavid Lagavulin 1979
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 An opportunity to taste another version of Lagavulin. Subtle and complex, but I missed the instant punch of peat.

Murray McDavid Mission Clynelish 1972
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 Spectacular aperitif. I wanted to eat a whole salmon.

Murray McDavid Mission Dallas Dhu 1979
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 The most elegant bottlng of the three from Dallas Dhu in this tasting. Soft, soothing.

Whisky Magazine - Editors Choice - Winner

Murray McDavid Mission Glenlivet 1974
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 The most feminine Glenlivet I have encountered.

Murray McDavid Mission II Caperdonich 1968
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 Good structure, but spoiled by bitterness and woodiness.

Murray McDavid Mission II Glen Grant 1969
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 This delicate malt in unusually full flavour.

Murray McDavid Mission II Glenlossie 1975
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 A rare chance to taste Glenlossie but, again, the wood gets in the way.

Whisky Magazine - Recommended - Winner

Murray McDavid Mission II Linkwood 1973
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 Very sophisticated bittersweet flavours. Adults only.

Murray McDavid Mission II Strathisla 1976
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 A good example of this distinctive and under-rated malt.

Murray McDavid Mission Royal Brackla 1975
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 An especially rich sherryish bottling. Voluptuous. With the afterdinner chocs.

Murray McDavid Rosebank 1990
Single Malt - Scotland - 40.00%
6 Rosebank is a delicate whisky, but just a touch more wood-extract would hold together its flavours.

Murray McDavid Rosebank 1990, Sherry Cask
Single Malt - Scotland - 40.00%
8 The flowery youth of the whisky and the freshness of the sherry cask achieve an interesting harmony.

Whisky Magazine - Recommended - Winner

Murray McDavid Springbank 1965
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 The characteristic salt and coconut characteristics of Springbank are very evident in this bottling, but perhaps overwhelmingly so. I may need more time to understand this one.

MWBH Glen Garioch 15 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 52.30%
7 A refreshing young whisky that would make a great aperitif when neat, or mixed in a classic Manhattan.

NC2 Imperial
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 An aperitif dram.
