1976 vintage whiskies

Aberlour 1976
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
8 A little more roundness would have been appreciated.

Aberlour 1976
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00%
8 Had I not known that it was matured in first-fill bourbon barrels. I would have guessed that there was some sherry.

Ardbeg 1976, Distillery Manager's Choice
Single Malt - Scotland - 56.00%
9 Real Ardbeg peatiness and smokiness.

Whisky Magazine - Recommended - Winner

Ardbeg 1976, Single Cask Committee bottling
Single Malt - Scotland - 51.00%
8 A 'no bones about it' Islay whisky, and a fine example of Ardbeg.

Auchentoshan 1976 30 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 41.80%
7 Better on palate than the nose, but so fragile it shatters easily.

BenRiach Bottled for Craigellachie Hotel 1976
Single Malt - Scotland - 57.60%
8 Very enjoyable and marked up for balance and poised integration.

Berry's Own Selection Imperial 1976
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
7 A classic malty malt. Good balance, interesting dry spiciness. Well structured, hexagonal like Bach music. For those who don't like the unexpected. I don't mean boring though.

Cadenhead's Benromach 1976, 27 Years Old Authentic Collection
Single Malt - Scotland - 57.10%
8 The nose promised more smoothness. Quite an austere character on the palate but with a lot of class.

Cooper's Choice Strathisla 1976, 27 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 Always a complex whisky, hard to pin down. This sample seems to have triggered an oriental mood.

Dewar Rattray Glenglassaugh 1976 29 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 53.00%
7 Of interest, but not great.

Dewar Rattray Strathmill 1976
Single Malt - Scotland - 48.40%
7 All was going so well then the finish undoes all the good work. Ultimately unbalanced. Still at least my breath smells minty fresh.

Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve 1976
Single Malt - Scotland - 51.90%
7 The nose opens like a rosebud on a sunny morning.Beautifully structured. A dram which demands time tobefully enjoyed.

Glenglassaugh 1976, Dormant Distillery Co.
Single Malt - Scotland - 47.40%
7 A distinctive malt, but now slightly past its best.

Glenglassaugh 35 Years Old, 1976 Vintage
Single Malt - Scotland - 52.30%
8 A rich and mysterious dram.

Whisky Magazine - Recommended - Winner

Jura 35 Years Old, 1976 Feith A'Chaorainn
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 Distillery character has not been overwhelmed by long maturation.

Longmorn 1976 31 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 54.30%
8 A natural beauty. Rich and elegant, without ostentation. As harmonious as a concerto from Mozart.

Murray McDavid Mission II Strathisla 1976
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00%
8 A good example of this distinctive and under-rated malt.

Old & Rare Brora
- Scotland - 55.10%
7 Not the biggest Brora but a good one.

Old Malt Cask Convalmore 30 Years Old 1976
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00%
7 Shows maturity but very front loaded.

Rare Malts Glen Mhor 1976 28 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 51.90%
7 A straight-ahead, fruity, creamy, Speysider.

Signatory Caledonian 1976, 23 Years Old
Single Grain - Scotland - 58.50%
7 Despite their lightness, some grains can stand up to long periods in wood.

Signatory Edradour 1976
Single Malt - Scotland - 53.10%
7 Still a hint of the typical creaminess. Although its flavours are on the light side, Edradour is quite rich in body. It stands up well to age, but this is not the best '76 I have tasted.

Whisky Magazine - Recommended - Winner

Signatory Glen Grant 1976
Single Malt - Scotland - 58.20%
8 So like an armagnac. Sherry at its best. At its peak. Why not with foie gras and a fig compote?

Signatory Glendronach 1976 Cask Strength
Single Malt - Scotland - 53.10%
7 An enjoyable malt, but Glendronach is capable of more.

Whisky Magazine - Recommended - Winner

Tomintoul 1976 Vintage
- Scotland - 40.00%
8 A big initial impact then a slow gentle falling away.Worth a look.
